...A Real Blast of Cold Air...

Lets begin with the good news. There is an excellent chance our next
severe weather event here in Alabama won't be until sometime in 2005. And,
no heavy rain or flood threats in the near future, so the rivers, creeks,
and streams will have a great chance to get back within their banks and the
ground will be able to dry out. Unfortunately, however, that ground might be
frozen by the time we get to the end of the month!

The coldest air so far this season will continue to funnel in here
today with an icy wind. Despite total sunshine, most places will never see
40 today, and wind chill values will be below freezing at times.

Tonight, with a clear sky and light wind, temperatures should be
below freezing for a good 12 hours, and most places will wind up in the
upper teens. The colder valleys will be closer to 15, and the ridge tops
will probably be in the low 20s at daybreak. But, a hard freeze will be seen
statewide, even down to the Gulf coast.

A temporary moderating trend begins tomorrow afternoon with the
mercury reaching the mid to upper 40s, and low 50s are possible by Thursday.
But, another shot of cold air slips in here on Friday, and we will mention
the chance of a few snow flurries on Friday as this new surge of chilly air
arrives. Over the weekend, a similar setup for Sunday with yet another cold
front rolling in here with the chance of a few flurries early in the day, or
late Saturday night. Moisture will be very limited, and the flurries should
not amount to much. The big issue simply remains the cold air pattern in
place.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: As we often point out here, there is little skill in
a specific forecast beyond seven days, But, the overall pattern continues to
suggest very cold weather for Alabama. Models show several possibilities for
a snow set-up across the deep south, but we are simply too far away to be
specific, or to have any confidence in a specific system forming. Stay
tuned!
