ALABAMA TODAY: It was easily our coldest morning in about 11 months. Since
the hard freeze was so widespread, let's look at a comprehensive list of
this morning's lows:

13 in Collinsville
14 in Valley Head
17 in Rainbow City and Black Creek
18 in Pinson, Center Point, Cottondale, DeSoto State
Park, Crossville and at Vinemont.
19 in Decatur, Auburn, Ft. Payne, Talladega
20 in Birmingham, Huntsville, Weaver, Glencoe,
Alabaster, Russellville, Ashland, Alexander City
21 in Anniston, Wedowee, Hackleburg
22 in Muscle Shoals, Troy, Trussville, Tuscaloosa,
Clanton, Livingston, Greystone Farms
23 in Oxford and the Shelby County Airport
24 in Evergreen
25 in Mobile
26 in Montgomery

MORE WINTRY WEATHER AHEAD: While it won't be as cold tonight, but still a
hard freeze, and temperatures will start moderating Thursday, look for some
more colder air to arrive over the weekend we think Sunday will be quite
uncomfortable with north winds of 12 to 25 mph, occasional snow flurries and
highs only in the upper 30s. Monday looks even colder with lows in the teens
and highs not much above freezing.

A WINTER WONDERLAND: Even more snow accumulated in the higher elevations of
the Great Smoky Mountains and the Western North Carolina mountains
overnight. This morning the temperature was a frigid zero atop Mt. LeConte
with 20 inches of snow on the ground, including 4 additional inches in the
last 24 hours. Their high yesterday was only 11. It was 7 degrees on
Newfound Gap with 8 inches of snow, while Beech Mountain, N.C. had a low of
6 and one-half foot of snow. Atop Mt. Mitchell, N.C. there was 9 inches of
snow on the ground and a low of 3 above...around the rest of the USA, the
coldest in the lower 48 was 10 below zero at Saranac Lake, New York. It was
42 below at Nuiqsut, Alaska. At Dead Horse in Northern Alaska, the wind
chill has been running as low as minus 62 today.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I thought little Miss Molly would get to go
ice skating on the Old Crow Creek this morning, but there was very little
ice. It's a fairly fast-running wet-weather stream across from the Old Crow
Motel. On our morning walk, the Old Crow Motel sure did look barren and
lonesome. Not a living creature in any of the rooms (er, limbs). We didn't
see any crows, other birds, gnats, spiders, mosquitoes-you name it. Little
Miss Molly and I were the only living souls. She, like me, loves cold
weather and she sure did look cute in her Christmas sweater. Trying to catch
up on play time with her. None of us got in bed before midnight so she slept
a bit late this morning. Don't know what I am going to get that little
rascal for Christmas. She no longer has an addiction for toilet paper and
she is loaded on toys. Life goes on.
