...Moisture Levels Slowly Increasing...

Most communities across North-Central Alabama, including Birmingham,
have now gone eleven days in a row without measurable rain. And, the
last days with measurable rain on April 10 and 11 only brought 0.07".
The rain deficit for the year is now over one foot (12.16" to be
exact), and a large part of North Alabama is considered to be in an
"extreme drought" by NOAA. So, needless to say we will try to focus on
just how much rain will fall across our parched state this week.

TODAY: We will mention the chance of a few scattered showers across
North Alabama today and tonight as a weak surface boundary drifts
southward into an increasingly moist airmass. But, there is little
upper support for rain today, and rain totals should be light and
spotty. The best chance of scattered showers will come this afternoon
and this evening north of I-20, but a few isolated ones are not out of
the question across the central part of the state. While a few peeks
of sunshine are likely, the sky will be mostly cloudy today with a
high in the 77 to 81 degree range, just a little above normal for
April 24.

To the west, there is a very significant risk of severe thunderstorms
and tornadoes across the Southern Plains this afternoon and tonight;
some cities at risk include Dallas/Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, Tulsa,
and Wichita.

TOMORROW: We believe most of the day tomorrow will be dry and warm
here in Alabama with a mix of sun and clouds. There is only a very
small chance of any one spot getting wet; most of the organized
showers and storms will remain to the west of here. It will be very
late tomorrow night before the storms approach the western border of
Alabama.

THURSDAY: Finally we have a shot at some beneficial rain as the main
upper trough moves in from the west. We will highlight a good chance
of showers and thunderstorms statewide on Thursday, with the potential
for one inch of rain over the northern half of the state. South
Alabama communities can expect about one-half inch, but in that part
of Alabama they are not in drought conditions and soil moisture is
rather plentiful. A few strong thunderstorms could be involved, but
with wind fields slowly weakening, we don't expect a major severe
weather threat on Thursday at this time. The showers and storms will
move out of Alabama Thursday evening.

RACE WEEKEND: For now we will continue with a dry forecast for Friday
and the weekend; great
news for NASCAR fans streaming into Talladega for the weekend races.
Temperatures should be comfortable with afternoon temperatures peaking
in the mid to upper 70s. Early morning lows should be generally in the
50s.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The coldest spot in Alaska yesterday morning was
Anaktuvuk Pass with 5 degrees. San Juan, Puerto Rico reported 3.04" of
rain yesterday. Wink, TX was the nation's hottest place with 93
degrees.
