...Finally, Some Rain for Alabama...

We welcome rain back to Alabama today following a long dry spell; the
last measurable rain in Birmingham was way back on April 1l, and the
rain deficiency for the year is up to 12.46". The rain today won't
make too much of a dent in that big deficit, but most North Alabama
communities can expect around one-half inch, enough to wet the
pavement and make the grass and flowers happy for a short while. Some
isolated amounts to one inch are possible, mainly in areas north of
Birmingham.

A few strong thunderstorms are possible this morning, but with only
limited instability and weakening wind fields we don't expect any
major problems with severe weather. The showers and storms will be
ending from west to east this afternoon as drier air punches into the
state from the west. It could be that the greatest risk of severe
storms will come this afternoon near the Georgia border, in far East
Alabama, where the air will have some time to destabilize.
Tomorrow promises to be a very nice day with ample sunshine, lower
humidity, and a fresh breeze out of the northwest. The dry and
comfortable weather will last into the weekend.

RACE WEEKEND OUTLOOK: After the round of showers and storms today, the
weather looks excellent for all of the activities this weekend at the
Talladega Superspeedway. Afternoon temperatures will peak in the mid
70s tomorrow and Saturday, with upper 70s likely on Sunday. A few
scattered clouds will show up from time to time, but we have removed
that slight risk of a shower on Saturday because the airmass will be
so dry. Morning temperatures will be cool; a good chance of upper 40s
around the track during the early morning hours on both Saturday and
Sunday. All in all a fine weekend, weather-wise.

AT THE BEACH: If you are beach-bound for the weekend, the weather
looks great down there as well with mostly sunny mild days and clear
pleasant nights. Afternoon highs along the immediate coast will be in
the 70 to 75 degree range, and the sea water temperature last night at
Panama City Beach was 71 degrees.

MAY PREVIEW: Looking ahead to the coming month, Birmingham's average
rainfall during the month of May is 4.83". The average high rises from
78 degrees on May 1 to 84 on May 31. May is still a big part of our
spring tornado season, and some of the most violent tornadoes in
Alabama weather history have come late in the month. For example, an
F4 tornado destroyed much of the town of Brent on May 27, 1973, and
killed five people.

ROAMING: South Bend, Indiana was soaked with 2.48" of rain yesterday.
Triple digit heat returned to the Desert Southwest; the high in Death
Valley, California was 100 degrees.
