...Not Much Rain For Awhile...

Alabama's weather sure looks dry for the next seven to ten days. While
parts of the state received beneficial rain yesterday; a number of
communities to the east and south of Birmingham reported less than
one-tenth of an inch (some places barely had enough rain to wet the
pavement). It was good to see the big soaking in downtown Birmingham;
the Birmingham Airport reported a storm total of 1.98", which has
reduced the rain deficit for the year to 10.63". However, more than
likely that figure will be over one foot again by the middle part of
next week as another long dry spell is setting up.

Today looks very pleasant with a good supply of sunshine and lower
humidity levels. We are projecting a high in the mid 70s, not far from
normal values for April 27. A fresh breeze out of the west will
continue to bring dry air into the state.

OUR WEEKEND: A disturbance rotating around the back side of a big
upper air low around the Great Lakes will bring some clouds to Alabama
tomorrow, and it might squeeze out a few isolated showers. The best
chance of those showers will be north of I-20 (that runs from
Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston), and even in that part of the
state rain should be light and very spotty.

The chance of the Talladega Superspeedway seeing a shower tomorrow is
only about one in ten. Then, sunshine returns in full force on Sunday.
We are forecasting a high in the mid 70s tomorrow, with upper 70s
Sunday afternoon. Mornings will be pleasant; the cooler valleys have a
chance of reaching the upper 40s both tomorrow and Sunday morning.

NEXT WEEK: As the primary storm track across North America shifts to
the north, afternoons will be warmer. We expect a daily high between
80 and 85 degrees for most communities next week, with partly to
mostly sunny days and fair nights. For now we don't see any
significant weather system to produce rain. In fact, the weather looks
relatively dry through mid-May with the core of the jet stream
remaining over the northern third of the United States.

AT THE BEACH: If you are headed for the Gulf coast this weekend, the
weather will be delightful with mostly sunny days and clear nights. In
fact, the weather looks dry through most of next week as well. Daily
highs will be in the 70s with lows in the upper 50s and low 60s. The
sea water temperature late yesterday afternoon at Panama City Beach
was 72 degrees.

ONE MORE LOOK AT THURSDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals across Alabama yesterday
included 2.16" at Gardendale, 1.90" at Trussville, 1.86" in downtown
Birmingham, 1.65" at Bessemer, 1.52" at Pinson, 1.26" at Tuscaloosa,
1.02" at Fayette, 1.01" at Gadsden, 0.85" at Cullman, and 0.76" at
Jasper. Amounts were much lighter over East Alabama; Munford received
only .13", while the total in the community of Muscadine, in Cleburne
County, was only .02"!
