GOOD AFTERNOON: Well, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed when I
woke up this morning and saw that the temperature had reached freezing at
the Birmingham Airport. I really was excited by the prospect of us breaking
the latest first freeze record. That's one of those weather records that
you look back on with fondness a few years later. Not like a tornado
outback or a drought or a major winter storm. It's like, "Oh yeah, that's
the year my grass stayed green until December." So close...
OVERNIGHT LOWS: Temperatures fell to freezing or below across all of North
and most of Central Alabama this morning. Some readings from across the
state included:
Birmingham Airport 31
NWS Shelby Co Airport 31
Anniston 29
Tuscaloosa 30
Pinson 26
Decatur 27
Fort Payne 27
ANOTHER FREEZE TONIGHT? Indications are that readings will be at or just
below freezing across all of the area again tomorrow. Readings on Saturday
morning will be a couple of degrees warmer, likely in the mid 30s. Down
near the ground, where temperatures are a little cooler than where the
official ones are taken, we will probably see a little frost.
SKY TEXTURE: I hope you enjoyed the beautiful palette of clouds in the sky
this morning. The models had been predicting partly cloudy skies this
morning, but I had been sort of ignoring it and hoping it would go away.
Sure enough, some clouds greeted me when I awakened. The clouds are
associated with some mid level moisture moving across on southwesterly winds
aloft. Still, lots of sunshine was evident and temps were in the 50s.
REST OF THE WEEK: Nice weather should continue through the end of the week.
Things will begin to change rapidly as we head into the weekend, however.
The latest model runs have been speeding this next system up a bit. Our
winds will become southerly on Saturday and clouds will thicken during the
day. Showers will probably begin during the overnight Saturday night.
Sunday looks to be a wet day with lots of rain and some embedded
thunderstorms as a warm front lifts over the state. The current thinking is
that by Monday morning, the low will be near Memphis with a trailing cold
front along the Mississippi River.
This would deliver a round of storms to the area during the on day on
Monday. The overnight and early morning runs of the GFS have sped up this
system a bit, with the heavy weather coming in during the early morning
hours on Monday.
There is quite a bit of disagreement about mid week weather later in next
week. A second low pressure system may bring more rain to the area around
Thursday, although the overnight GFS continues to take this system further
to the south. There still are signs that a significant cold wave will come
our way at mid-month.
