BLOW DRYING ALABAMA: Even though we had some good rains recently,
you can bet that rapid drying has taken place across the state today. Dew
points were in the 20s, meaning very low humidity, and westerly winds have
been gusting frequently as high as 35-40 mph. With temperatures warming even
more for Saturday and windy conditions continuing, the NWS suggests that
outdoor burning be discouraged. It will dry enough by tomorrow for an
outdoor fire to easily get away from you, even though there are no official
fire alerts.

We do expect the wind to weaken tonight, but not completely go calm.
With low dew points in the area, we will see some low temperatures by
morning in the upper 30s. We expect rapid warming Saturday and we have upped
our high temperature to 70 degrees. This is based mainly on winds backing
around to a more west and SW direction and with marked warming expected at
about 5,000 feet above the ground.

Clouds will increase Sunday as a cold front passes through from
north to south. There will be a slight chance of showers and those should
increase Sunday night. The showers should end Monday morning.

A COLD MARCH SO FAR: At Birmingham Airport, the first 10 days of
March averaged an impressive 8.4 degrees colder than normal. We did have a
high of 70 on the 5th, but most days have been chilly.

MORE SNOW FOR THE SMOKIES: Disturbances moving rapidly from the NW
to the SE will bring some more snow to the Great Smoky Mountains late
tonight and Saturday morning. As much as 4-6 inches of new snow is expected,
especially in the high country.

FRIDAY NOTES: In the lower 48, temperature extremes in the last 24
hours included 93 in Palm Springs, California and 18 below zero at Presque
Isle in extreme Northern Maine...on this date in 1923, a powerful F5 tornado
in West Tennessee hit Deanburg and Pinson. It left 20 dead. At least
one-fourth of Pinson was obliterated. Pinson is located on US-45 about 10
miles SE of Jackson...in 1988 on this date, a huge blizzard in the Northern
Plains brought 69 inches of snow to Lead in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Wind gusts to 63 mph produced 30-foot drifts.

THE BLIZZARD OF '93: Tomorrow is the 12th anniversary of a historic
winter storm in Alabama. I'm sure Bill Murray will write extensively about
this over the weekend. In my 40 plus years of weather work, I have never
seen thunder snow more than 4 or 5 times. It happened in a big way on the
night of March 12, 1993. The whole state was covered by snow-very rare.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A missed photo-op because I did not
have my trusty 26-year old Nikon with me. Just as little Miss Molly and I
were passing the Old Crow Motel at sunrise, there was a nice patch of
altocumulus clouds serving as a backdrop. A big overweight robin was the
lone bird sitting on one of the limbs (rooms) and it would have made a
beautiful photograph or even a Thomas Kinkade painting. I have just got to
take walks and leave Molly home. She keeps such close tabs on me that I
consider her my shadow. I really believe that if I were to go out the back
door and get on the walking track without her, she would file a restraining
order against me. I can't even go get the mail or the morning paper without
her pressing her little nose against the front door window tracking me. I
must admit that I love that. Life goes on.
