...Hello Spring...

GOOD MORNING! Spring makes the scene at 6:33 a.m. CST this morning. Of course, meteorologically speaking, we have been in the Spring season since March 1.

STORMS IN OUR FUTURE: And Spring is one of our primary severe weather seasons here in Alabama. In keeping with that, severe weather will be a possibility Monday night and Tuesday as a strong low pressure system forms over the Plains states and heads northeast. First, a warm front will be drawn northward over the southern states by the increasing southerly flow ahead of the low. This will produce a round of showers and storms during the day on Monday. Behind the front, the airmass will become quite unstable. Then the timing of the event becomes critical. A squall line will form ahead of a cold front and push toward Alabama. If it arrives during the early morning hours on Tuesday, as advertised by the GFS model, the main threat would be damaging winds and isolated tornadoes associated with the line of storms. If it arrives in the afternoon, as advertised by the NAM model, supercells could form in advance of the line, and significant tornadoes would be more likely. Now is a good time to review your severe weather plans.

TODAY: A little dense fog out there this morning, so be careful. After it burns off, today will be a nice day, with partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures. Skies will become cloudy overnight.

WEEK AHEAD: Wednesday should see a return of some sunshine, but an active southern branch of the jetstream will give us a chance of showers on Thursday. A new storm system will deliver a good chance of showers and storms on Friday, with rain chances lasting into Saturday. Temps will be near normal for most of the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: No watches and no warnings were in effect when a tornado struck the area around Gainesville GA during the early morning hours. Two schools and dozens of homes were in the 13 mile path of the fast moving twister that killed 12 people. Had the twister struck an hour later, school would have been in session and the death toll undoubtedly would have been much higher.
