...Shine On Harvest Moon...
Tonight will mark the arrival of the Harvest Moon. It harkens back to
Native American days, when the individual full moons had nicknames.
There was the Full Wolf Moon in January, named for the wolves that
came calling during heavy snowpacks. There was the Full Flower Moon
in May, when spring wildflowers were at their peak. And there was the
Harvest Moon, which came during the time of harvest, giving precious
extra hours to bring in the crops. The Harvest Moon is traditionally
is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. That would be the
one that begins just after midnight tonight.
NICE START TO WEEKEND: We are getting off to a nice start on this
October Saturday morning. With most of the area in the 40s, skies are
sunny. Sunshine will be the rule of the day with a light northwest
wind. Look for highs in the upper 70s.
MOISTURE RETURNS QUICKLY: Clouds will start to spread back into the
area overnight and skies will become mostly cloudy by Sunday morning.
Rain chances will begin to increase by Sunday afternoon and rain will
become likely Sunday night as a warm front moves northward through the
area. Moisture will continue to pump into the area on Monday and
Tuesday ahead of an approaching cold front. We get a little break
from the rain Wednesday and Thursday before another big wet weather
system moves in for the weekend. All the rain will move out in time
for the following Monday with a change to cooler and drier.
FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama travels to Lexington to take on the
Kentucky Wildcats in a late morning affair. It should be dry and
mostly sunny. Kickoff temperatures will be in the upper 50s, peaking
at around 62 during the game. Wind could play a factor with southwest
winds averaging 10-15 mph but occasionally gusting to 30 mph. Auburn
travels to Knoxville to play the Vols this evening. Dry weather
expected with temperatures starting out around 65, falling back to
near 50 by the final whistle.
TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic continues to be eerily quiet as we
head into the backside of the season. A tropical wave about 400 miles
east of the Lesser Antilles is the only feature of note and it is
disorganized with no real prospects for development.
WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the podcast that's all about
weather. Tornado and lightning researcher Tim Samaras was our guest
this week. It is a great listen. This week, we address the response
to severe weather watches and warnings with sociology expert Eve
Gruntfest. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes.
It's free!
ON THIS DATE IN 1979: A costly tornado hit Windsor and Windsor Locks,
Connecticut. The tornado was rated as an F4. It is the second
strongest tornado to ever hit New England. The Bradley Air Museum was
hard hit, where sixteen vintage aircraft were destroyed. Damage
totaled $200 million. Tornadoes are rare in Connecticut, where the
average number per year is less than two. Killer tornadoes are even
rarer: it was the first killer tornado of record in Connecticut.
Three people died and 500 were injured in the short lived but intense
twister. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.
