All this moisture, and some good radiational cooling conditions have
led to some patchy dense fog across Central Alabama on this Sunday
morning. Be careful if you are out driving early this morning before
the sun burns away the fog.
RAINY SATURDAY: Rain and storms were fairly widespread across the area
on Saturday, but the good news was that most everything was moving
along fairly quickly with the approaching trough and cold front. The
heaviest rainfall was in a streak from Pickens through northern
Tuscaloosa and into southern Walker County. Doppler estimates
indicated that there might have been 4-5 inches of rain south of
Parrish and Oakman. Flooding was reported in Vernon in Lamar County.

BYE, BYE WET WEATHER: Finally, after two solid weeks of heavy rainfall
that resulted in some incredible rainfall amounts, including 7.51
inches at the Birmingham Airport, the rain is over for awhile. It
looks like Birmingham will finish with 10.69 inches of rain for
September. According to Brian's research, September 2009 will rank as
the third wettest since 1900. Impressive, especially with no named
tropical storm or hurricane involved. Parts of West Alabama received
an amazing 20+ inches in the past thirty days.

FALL WEATHER: Fall started last Tuesday, but you haven't been able to
tell it with all the warmth and humidity. Things will finally get back
on track now as drier and slightly cooler air moves into the state.
You will see those dew points begin to drop today, on the back of
westerly winds that will be a little on the brisk side by afternoon.
Skies will be partly cloudy during the afternoon, but become clear
before nightfall. Overnight readings will drop to near 60F on average.
A secondary surge of cooler and drier air will arrive late Sunday
night or Monday morning, accompanied a few clouds, and perhaps a
shower, although rain looks unlikely. Monday will see plenty of
sunshine with a fairly brisk northerly wind. Look for middle 50s
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. We had thought that the
weekend would be wet, but high pressure may hold off an approaching
front for awhile. TROPICS: The National hurricane Center issued the
last advisory on Tropical Depression Number 8. It was sheared apart by
hostile winds. Nothing really of note in the global models for the
next two weeks as our quiet hurricane season continues.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: Tim Samaras this week. Eve Gruntfest of
SSWIM on October 5th. Les Lemon on October 12th. Weather rains on
October 19th. We will have an AM Weather reunion on October 26th. The
Dr. Chuck Doswell on November 2nd. Follow WeatherBrains on Twitter
@weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1955: A day after claiming the lives of eight
crewmembers and two members of the press aboard a Navy reconnaissance
plane, intense Hurricane Janet passed over Swan Island with winds
estimated to 200 mph. The hurricane made landfall early the next
morning near Chetumal, Mexico and crossed into the Bay of Campeche,
where it made landfall again near Veracruz, Mexico.
