...Great Weekend!...

GOOD MORNING! Alright, folks. It's halftime of our tropical extravaganza
and I hate to say that the second half promises to be much more exciting
than the first half. We have a dangerous Category Three hurricane
threatening the extremely vulnerable Tampa Bay area. Charley will move
inland on the West Coast of Florida somewhere near the Tampa area early
tonight.

A PLEASANT WEEKEND AHEAD: Earlier in the week, we thought we might be
monitoring a dangerous hurricane in the Central Gulf this morning. That
would almost certainly have had a major effect on Alabama weather. As it
turns out, Charley has taken a more easterly track, just off the Florida
West Coast. That's good news for us here, but bad news for Floridians.
Here in North Central Alabama, we are left to face a pleasant weekend of
plentiful sunshine, low humidity levels and comfortable temperature
readings. On Thursday morning, the low at Vichy/Rolla, MO was a chilly 45
degrees. That was one of several record lows for the date, but even more
importantly, an all-time record for August cold. Now, add about 11-12
degrees to that, and you will have the average temperatures over the next
couple of nights across our area. A few of the normally colder locations
may see lower 50s Saturday and Sunday morning.

HOW ABOUT THE WEEK AHEAD? Mostly sunny skies will prevail at least through
Sunday. Temperatures will trend back up to near normal levels for this time
of year by Wednesday. By that time, moisture levels will recover enough
to permit the return of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. But still,
conditions should remain dry through much of the coming week. The next
significant chance of rain will come next weekend in the Friday/Saturday
time frame. It appears that the tropical Atlantic will be extremely busy
for the next couple of weeks. An impressive disturbance is located just off
the coast of Africa. It will be making its way across the Atlantic over the
next ten days.
