GOOD AFTERNOON! Charley is making landfall on the western coast of Florida in the Port Charlotte/Fort Myers area as a Category Four hurricane. Charley has strengthened rapidly and now has top winds of 145 mph. See today’s edition of Weather Talk for more information on Charley. The tropics promise to be rather busy for the next ten days or so as soon-to-be Tropical Storm Danielle steams across the Atlantic. The newly-formed tropical depression number four in the far eastern Atlantic should strengthen to
tropical storm status later today or tonight.

WHAT A MORNING! When I got on a plane in Jacksonville, Florida this morning at 7 a.m., the temperature was 79 and the dew point was a sopping 75 degrees. When my plane touched down in Birmingham, it was a cool and comfortable 60 over 51. I though I had landed in New Mexico instead of Birmingham.

RECORD CITY: The wires have been humming with record low temperatures coming in from all over the country this morning. Records have been tied or broken in at least 15 states from South Dakota to Colorado to Alabama. I had counted at least forty seven records lows for September 13th by 10:30 a.m. and it is certain there will be a bunch more to add to that. Some notable record lows:

55 here in Birmingham
63 at Mobile
51 at Huntsville
52 at Tupelo, MS
64 at Corpus Christi, TX
47 at Springfield, MO
43 at Rapid City, SD

Several stations set all-time record lows for the month of August. Some of those included:

47 at Jackson, TN
52 at Greenville, MS
52 at Greenwood, MS
58 at Vicksburg, MS
59 at Austin, TX

MORE RECORDS AHEAD: The record low for August 14th in Birmingham is 58 degrees. It appears that we will be able to break that record, with a projected overnight low of 56. It will be touch and go on Sunday morning, when the record low and the projected low are 58..

WEEKEND WEATHER: Beautiful weather will continue through the remainder of the weekend with lots of sunshine, low humidities and comfortable temperatures. Daytime highs will be in the low 80s on Saturday and mid 80s
on Sunday.

THE WEEK AHEAD: More nice weather will continue through much of the upcoming week. Daytime high temperatures will return to near normal levels for this time of year by Monday, with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 all week long. Moisture levels will be slower to rise, leaving dew points in the lower 60s until Wednesday, which will give us comfortable overnight lows. Next chance of rain: possibly Thursday as a front approaches from the northwest. There will be a better chance on Friday as the front draws closer.
