WELCOME RAINS FOR SOME FOLKS: Not everybody got rain, but some
parts of Alabama received some beneficial amounts today. Some of the
heaviest rain was over the west-central part of the state. Based on radar
estimates more than 2 inches fell in some areas in a relatively short time.
A year ago, Hurricane Ivan was playing havoc in our area during the
afternoon and evening.
The showers and storms were moving toward the SE. Meanwhile to the
NW, we look for a "cold front" to approach. It is not really a "cold" front,
but it will bring us cooler nights and lower humidity in the daytime. The
front has slowed somewhat and it may not reach Central Alabama until
Saturday morning. However, we believe all the ingredients for showers and
thunderstorms will have moved out ahead of the front, so we expect dry
weather for Saturday. The rest of the weekend looks dry with mostly
sunshine. Low temperatures will sink back into the mid 60s over the weekend.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Ball State University will be in Auburn for a
1:30 kickoff Saturday. It should be mostly sunny with near 90 to start the
game. Ball State is based in Muncie, Indiana and is named after the Ball
brothers (5 of them!). About an hour later, at 2:30 CDT, the Alabama-South
Carolina game will be in Columbia. It should be partly sunny with about 92
at kickoff. UAB will play Jacksonville at Legion Field in an evening game.
It should be 82 and clear for the 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
TROPICAL WEATHER: We can more or less say goodbye to Tropical
Storm Ophelia although she may cause some problems Saturday out on Cape Cod.
Way out in the Atlantic, a tropical wave 550 miles ESE of the Southern
Windward Islands may become a tropical depression in the next day or so as
it moves WNW. A large area of showers and thunderstorms were near the
Dominican Republic and extends ENE into the Atlantic for several hundred
miles. Slow development is possible for the next day or two. Our beloved
Gulf of Mexico is completely quiet. Sea surface temperatures are in the
82-86 range.
WIPING OFF MY DESK: I really did have to, because I spilled a whole
can of diet rootbeer all over my paperwork...105 in Laredo was the hottest
yesterday...it was 24 this morning in Stanley, Idaho...seems like that town
in the Sawtooth Mountains has cornered the market on being the cold
spot...up in NW Canada, a cold 13 this morning at Alert...big storms in Ohio
produced 4.45 inches of rain in Dayton...in West Arkansas, another 1.31
inches brought the two-day total in Ft. Smith to 4.45 inches.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A visit by three more grandkids
yesterday wore Molly out again, so I did not have to play with her as much.
Sounds like I am overjoyed to get relieved of that duty. Really, I am not. I
love every minute playing with her when I am not too busy. On our early
morning walk, we finally heard two old crows again. They seem to hang around
a day or two then disappear for a week. We do not like for them to be
gone...another encounter with the community cat. He saw Molly coming down
the walking track and crouched down behind a step trying to hide. Molly
immediately dashed down the steps, but the cat would not move. She quickly
got the message. She knows which side her bread is buttered on. She turned
around and came back to me and was ready to take off again. Will have time
for a lot of ball playing and walking Saturday. I am going to drag her out
of bed very, very early. Life goes on.
