...Noisy Thunderstorms...

FEWER STORMS EARLY IN THE WEEK: We still need rain, but how would you
like a break from so many thunderstorms starting about Tuesday and
lasting through Thursday? It does not happen very often in July, but
it looks like a weak cool front may push down across Alabama starting
during the day Monday. One of our most trusted weather models (if
there is such a thing) hints that the front may push all the way down
to Gulf Shores by midweek. That would not eliminate all the showers
and thunderstorms, especially down south, but it could mean a drop in
humidity over the north and central counties. We do not want to bet
the farm on this yet, but we could see some early morning low
temperatures in the mid 60s by Tuesday morning. That will be
noticeably better than low and mid 70s like we have had recently.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: I should not be dreaming about lower humidity,
but instead dealing with the thunderstorms at hand. They were slow
about developing today, but once they got started, they increased in
number this afternoon. Most of them were moving almost due east and,
again today, they were sporting loud window-shaking thunder and vivid
lightning. So far this afternoon, most of the storms have been across
North/Central and Central Alabama with very few in the Tennessee
Valley. South Alabama has not had many, except near the coast.

We expect more scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow—a good
chance, in fact, and some communities again will get locally heavy rain.

A large number of communities got downpours yesterday. Some of the
heavier amounts (A long list is posted on the 33/40 Blog.):

3.89 at Valley Head
2.80 Athens TVA
1.47 Birmingham Airport
1.72 Munford

A 101-DEGREE WAKE UP: How would you like to awaken with a low
temperature of 101? That happened this morning in Death Valley,
California where the high yesterday was 127. Elsewhere around this
great nation it was a chilly 36 this morning in Fairbanks and Barrow,
Alaska. Some of the coolest temperatures in the lower 48 are in the
40s in places like Yellowstone National Park. Honolulu has received
only 2.13 inches of rain so far this year, which is only 22% of
average. The blistering heat continues in the Desert Southwest. It was
105 yesterday in Yosemite National Park. Lake Mead, which is the main
water source for Las Vegas and other cities in the Southwest, was only
46% full this morning.

TROPICAL: Hurricane Bertha was about 485 miles SE of Bermuda this
afternoon. That is the only storm of concern in the entire Atlantic
Basin. The latest track forecast takes the old girl not too far east
of Bermuda Sunday and then northward toward the colder waters of the
North Atlantic. She had sustained winds of 90 mph at midday. She
should drop below hurricane force Monday night.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has been asleep almost
the entire day. The storms yesterday and especially last night were so
loud that it was shaking our windows, so you can guess where she was.
She now has 4 or 5 hiding places and when she hears the first thunder
over in Mississippi it takes her only about 15 seconds to go into
hibernation. A story later about a tragic loss of a beloved pet.
