ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...More Afternoon Storms...

TROPICAL AIR STAYS IN PLACE: A deep layer of moist air remain in place
across Alabama this morning, and we expect another day of tropical
downpours this afternoon. While a few morning showers are possible,
most of the showers and thunderstorms will come this afternoon into
the nighttime hours. The slow movers could drop over one inch of rain
in a short amount of time, with some localized flooding possible. And,
of course, all summer storms pack gobs of lightning, and there is
potential for strong gusty winds as well. Most communities will remain
below 90 again today due to the clouds and showery conditions.

OUR WEEKEND: The old surface front just north of here will fall apart
during the next 24 hours, leaving the state in a moist environment
tomorrow and Sunday. That means scattered, mainly afternoon showers
and thunderstorms both days. The storms should be more numerous by
Sunday afternoon and Sunday night with another cold front approaching
from the north.
It now appears that this front will indeed have enough southward push
to reach South Alabama by early Monday. This means the northern half
of the state should be generally rain-free for the first half of next
week with lower humidity values and cooler nights. We could reach the
low 60s by daybreak Tuesday. Afternoon highs will be in the low 90s,
but the low humidity will help to make the heat a little more
comfortable. A few widely scattered afternoon showers or storms could
show up by the latter half of the week.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Look for about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine along
the Gulf Coast from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores tomorrow and
Sunday, with the daily opportunity of a few
scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs will stay in the 86 to 89
degree range, with water temperatures remain mostly in the mid 80s.

BERTHA: Hurricane Bertha is hanging in here; this morning the system
is about 300 miles southeast of Bermuda, and is moving to the north-
northwest. Bertha should pass east of Bermuda over the weekend, with a
slow weakening trend beginning by Monday as the storm begins to move
over colder water of the North Atlantic. Still no threat to the East
Coast of the U.S. The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet,
and additional tropical storm formation is not expected through Sunday.

THURSDAY SOAKERS: Cullman County was under a flash flood warning for a
few hours last night; the rain total at our SKYCAM site just east of
downtown Cullman was 1.33", but radar data suggested some parts of the
county received over two inches. Up to one foot of water was flowing
over roads in West Point. Our Skywatcher in Jemison reported 1.13".

EXTREMES: Hottest place in the U.S. yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 124 degrees; coldest was Stanley, Idaho with 34 degrees. Coldest
place in Alaska was Barrow with 36. This is the time of the year when
folks in Barrow enjoy the "midnight sun".
