...Showers and Storms Ramping Up...

TROPICAL DOWNPOURS: The combination of deep tropical moisture, and a
weak surface boundary just north of here will mean scattered to
numerous showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today. While the
best chance of storms will come this afternoon, we sure can't rule our
a few morning showers in spots. Like recent days, the storms that fire
up today will be slow movers, and some spots will get heavy amounts of
rain. And, the storms will be capable of producing strong, gusty
winds, small hail, and a bunch of lightning. Heat levels will drop due
to the clouds and showers; most Alabama communities won't make it out
of the 80s today.

The front to the north will dissipate tomorrow, leaving Alabama in a
moist, tropical airmass over the weekend. That means routine summer
weather for Saturday and Sunday with your classic mix of sun, heat,
humidity, and storms. Highs over the weekend will be pretty close to
90 degrees, which is about average for mid-July in Alabama.
Some hint of a temporary intrusion of drier air in here around Tuesday
of next week on the computer model runs, but dry air shots are pretty
rare here in the middle of July, so we will roll with a persistence
forecast all of next week for now.

BERTHA: This hurricane in the middle of the Atlantic grew stronger
again yesterday, making category two status with sustained winds of
105 mph. The system is about 600 miles southeast of Bermuda, and
should recurve over the open water of the Atlantic during the next
five days only threatening shipping lanes. Bertha will weaken to a
tropical storm by the weekend as it moves over colder water. For now,
the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

BEACH FORECAST: We expect about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day
along the Gulf coast (Panama City west to Gulf Shores) through Sunday
with the daily chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs
along the coast will be in the mid to upper 80s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: The Great Midwest Flood continues: flood waters
close the Des Moines, Iowa water treatment plant, leaving the city's
250,000 residents without water for 12 days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1936: Unbelievable heat in the Mid Atlantic states.
Following state all-time heat records fell on this date: 111 at
Phoenixville PA; 112 at Martinsburg WV; 109 atFrederick and Cumberland
MD; and 110 at Runyon NJ. The 1930s is the hottest decade on record in
the U.S., and featured the Great Dust Bowl Drought.

TO COOL YOU OFF: Check our this report from our Skywatcher in
Girdwood, Alaska, Todd Foisy: High 57.7/Low 47.1/Current 57.3/Rain
Trace. The year without a summer continues. The cool, cloudy weather
persists, and the nearby mountains still have the highest amount of
snowpack left since records began in 1983.
