GOOD AFTERNOON: Did you know that today marks the beginning of solar summer? Not astronomical summer, which occurs on June 21st. Solar summer is the three month part of the year when maximum solar radiation occurs. It is actually centered on June 21st, the Summer Solstice. High pressure is centered over the Deep South this afternoon. That high pressure will keep a tentative hold on our weather for the next few days. Tonight will be very pleasant, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Overnight lows will drop into the middle and upper 50s. There could be a little patchy fog around during the late night and early morning hours, but it wont pose a problem.
MOTHERS DAY FORECAST: As you get ready to do something special for your mom tomorrow, you will at least have nice weather for the occasion. Skies will be mostly sunny again with just a few scattered clouds High temperature readings tomorrow will reach 80 degrees.
WEEK AHEAD: An upper level trough will begin to approach Alabama from the west by Monday, bringing back a chance of showers late Monday night. Showers and perhaps a storm will affect us on Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday. High pressure aloft will build in Thursday, but low level flow will continue out of the south, keeping moisture levels high. We will see a more summerlike pattern into the weekend, with partly cloudy, warm and humid conditions along with afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms possible.
NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Beautiful weather in Louisville for todays 131st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Different story in New England, where an intensifying noreaster is bringing high winds and driving rains to the Northeast today. A coastal flood warning is in effect for eastern Massachusetts and Nantucket, where a moderate coastal flood event is expected this afternoon and tonight. Wind advisories are also in effect, except for Cape Cod and Nantucket, where a high wind warning is in effect for sustained winds over 40 mph and occasional gusts over 60 mph. Winter weather advisories are in effect above 8500 in northern Colorado, including Vail Pass, where over a foot of snow is expected through tonight. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for part of Wyoming. Severe weather is possible over a wide area today from the northern Plains southward to Texas today, but it is not expected to be widespread.
ON THIS DATE IN 2003: An afternoon of heavy rain caused flooding in the Birmingham area. Persistent thunderstorms dumped an official 5.71 inches on the airport between noon and 6 p.m., but the heaviest rainfall total came from Trussville, on the northeast side of the city, where over nine inches fell. Flooding was severe from Fultondale to Roebuck to the Trussville area, where water entering several businesses and overrunning the waste water treatment plant, dumping raw sewage into the Cahaba River. The Trussville City Hall was surrounded by water and eleven police cars were underwater. Over 2,000 cars were destroyed by the flooding in the Birmingham area.
