...Goodbye and Good Riddance!...
GOOD MORNING! A friend asked me this morning whose bright idea it was to
name hurricanes after Russian Tsars. I thought, wait a minute, I know Ivan
was a Tsar, but wasn't Frederic a Prussian King? Well, a quick trip back to
the World History book revealed that my friend's question had to be
modified slightly to make it correct. Whose bright idea was it to name
hurricanes after despots? And actually Frederick the Great had a "k" at
the end of his name, but I would have to say 1979's Hurricane Frederic and
2004's Hurricane Ivan were both evil despots...
IVAN A HISTORIC STORM: Whoever coined the name Ivan the Terrible for the
ninth named tropical cyclone of the 2004 North Atlantic Hurricane Season
knew what they were doing. Ivan went down into the record books for a
number of reasons. It ranks as the sixth strongest Atlantic tropical
cyclone on record. It also holds the distinction for creating the worst
electrical outage in the history of the state of Alabama, snatching the
record from Opal.
UNCERTAIN FUTURE FOR IVAN: We would like to be saying goodbye and good
riddance, but it might be bit too early. Ivan may have a few tricks in his
bag. Ivan should continue to weaken slowly, but still may be a tropical
storm by the time you read this. Now Ivan is expected to slow his forward
progress during the next couple of days, and it will move rather slowly over
the Tennessee/North Carolina border and then might turn southeastward
into...South Carolina? Might be a traffic jam as Jeanne approaches the
South Carolina coast next week. What's next? Don't ask.
OUR WEATHER Our weather should be on an upward incline. Any cloudiness or
leftover light rain should give way to increasing sunshine later today.
Northwesterly winds on the backside of Ivan will give us some cooler,
slightly drier Continental air for the weekend. It would be perfect
football weather Friday night...if there were gong to be any football games.
Another Ivan legacy...its proximity may keep it a little breezy over the
weekend.
