The ADA's "Step Out to Fight Diabetes"

"Step Out to Fight Diabetes" is the American Diabetes Association's
2007 fund-raising walk scheduled October 7th, 2007, at Linn Park.
Donations go to support ADA's mission: to prevent and cure diabetes
and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

More than 20 million Americans fight Diabetes daily, with Alabama
ranking in the top ten states with the highest number of diabetics
per capita!

I'm working towards a $10,000 goal and would appreciate your support
very much. Please make your tax deductible donation to the American
Diabetes Association by going to:

...Fire Danger High...

FIRE DANGER HIGH THIS WEEKEND: The combination of a very dry
airmass and some breezy northerly winds will set up a high danger for
wildfires across about the eastern half of North and Central Alabama
today. The potential is high for explosive fire growth today. There
should be no outdoor burning.

NO REAL RAIN IN SIGHT: High pressure aloft will remain parked over
the Southeast for the foreseeable future, keeping a parade of upper
level troughs passing to our north at bay through midweek. It will be
interesting to watch a couple of the shortwave troughs that will swing
by on Monday and Wednesday. They could bring some strong storms to
the Plains and Midwest. But here in Alabama, we will be high and dry
I am afraid as the systems will be starved for moisture before their
weak associated fronts reach us. In fact, there are no significant
rain systems shown coming anywhere near Alabama until around the 8th,
and even that one might be weakening. Maybe a little better chance
around the 14th. The drought will only worsen.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama is in Jacksonville to play Florida today
with a 4:00 p.m. kick off. Only a slight chance of a shower during the
game with 82 degrees at kick off lowering into the 70s. There will be
a brisk NE wind. Also in Florida, Auburn plays the University of
Florida at Gainesville starting at 7:00 p.m. There just a slight
chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the area with 84 at kick off.
UAB plays Tulsa in Tulsa with a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear and dry with
a gusty south wind. 85 at kick off, but near 70 by the end of the game

TROPICS: Karen presents an interesting case for us to study over
the next few days. Encountering a good bit of shear yesterday, the
system weakened to a minimal tropical storm. A late afternoon comeback
attempt was detected, but the system will likely be downgraded to a
depression today. It started moving northward on Friday and two
schools of thought remain about the future. Karen, or the remnants of
Karen could be picked up and pushed northeastward ahead of an
approaching trough. If the trough misses the storm, however, it could
resume a more westerly or west northwesterly course underneath the
building ridge behind the trough. It could then pose a threat to the
eastern U.S., including Florida. Intensification would be possible.
We will just have to wait and see. Tropical depression 14 formed in
the far eastern Atlantic yesterday. It will have a rough go with lots
of wind shear. Interestingly, the GFS model holds it together and
shows it becoming a formidable hurricane over the Central Atlantic
before it turns north and then northeast out to sea in the extended
period. Look for a tropical or subtropical depression to form off the
coast of North Carolina by Tuesday or Wednesday. It could play a role
or even absorb Karen.

ON THIS DATE IN 1965: Mobile was inundated with 16.85 inches of rain
during the night of the 29th and morning of the 30th as Tropical Storm
Debbie neared the Gulf Coast. The flooding resulted in $25 million in
damage in the Mobile area. Debbie is an interesting case because
the storm never made landfall. As it approached the northern Gulf
Coast on September 29th, it began to entrain dry air and weakened,
dissipating before it could reach land.
