...A Smorgasbord of Weather...

AN OVERDOSE OF BAD, BAD WEATHER: You name it. We could find almost any kind of weather in the world right here in the good old USA today. However, thousands of square miles including millions of people are going through a real trying time with the weather. A lot of people will rediscover that it is no fun whatsoever to drive on a sheet of ice.

Fortunately here in Alabama, there has not been very much freezing rain. There was some over the extreme north this morning and also a number of reports of sleet.

At the surface, the low-pressure area causing much of this discomfort is over the NW Gulf extending into South Louisiana. The circulation around that low is pulling in colder air from the north and NE. By daybreak Saturday, the low should be over SE Alabama and continuing to move toward the NE. When it does, our weather will improve. There is widespread rain over the southern part of the Gulf States. Rain will be locally heavy late today and tonight across Central Alabama. The NWS continues a Flash Flood Watch for numerous counties until midnight. The NWS/Huntsville posted a Winter Storm Warning for the extreme northern counties of Alabama.

Much of Central Alabama should receive between 1.25 and 1.50 inches of rain before it is all over. The rain will diminish after midnight.

Colder air will spill in behind the low-pressure area and we will probably not get out of the 30s Saturday. Clouds will hang tough, however, and we should have some morning snow flurries, but no problems with that. North winds will be gusting 25 mph at times. Our coldest morning will be Sunday morning when we have an average low of 21, but some teens in the NE Alabama valleys. Take heart, we look for dry weather and mostly sunshine from Sunday through Tuesday with milder afternoons.

A VERY BAD WINTER STORM: This storm system has played havoc from New Mexico to Tennessee and it will do the same for the Carolinas and Virginia. Reports are that I-40 was already very hazardous in the Nashville area and in the Texas Panhandle I-40 was completely closed with 13 inches of snow on the ground. If we had to pick a state that has suffered most from this winter storm, we would say Oklahoma. Massive damage from freezing rain to power lines, power poles and trees. In places, power was out in some counties. The state of Virginia has declared a State of Emergency. Gatlinburg may get 6 to 12 inches of snow and the city of Charlotte is rapidly getting ready.

AROUND THE GOOD OLD USA: Not everybody is cold. Temperatures were approaching 80 in South Florida this afternoon. The lowest in the lower 48 was 25 below at Embarrass, Minnesota and 24 below at Atqasuk, Alaska. In the Yukon of NW Canada, it was 18 above at Mayo, so temporarily we do not have any bitter super cold anxious to shoot at us.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was glad to have Alex visiting this morning. I took Molly out on her very first long walk, but we hurried back because I was loaded down with weather work. Alex is our grandson and Molly loves him dearly. He is a jewel. He will volunteer for any kind of work without being asked. He did a great job helping me rearrange my office this morning. It is now better laid out than ever. Little Miss Molly sure has had fun visiting with Alex, my daughter and our great granddaughter this morning. Alex is only 15, but he knows computers in and out. I will be as old as Noah before I learn that much. The majority owner says even then it is doubtful. Remember Noah was 400 years old when he built the ark and he had no connection whatsoever with NOAA weather radio. Life goes on.
