...Snow and Ice; A Troublesome Weekend...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a complicated one where we will see a risk of some freezing rain, a lot of regular rain, and even some snow flurries and a hard freeze by Sunday morning.

But we start at the beginning. Precipitation was already spreading across Arkansas and other areas to the west of Alabama early this morning. Clouds will thicken today. There could even be a little bit of light sleet spreading into West and NW Alabama early this morning, but it should not cause any problems.

Here in Central Alabama, rain is going to be the main story. We do not expect hardly any this morning, but it will increase some this afternoon. The more steady and widespread rain will be late in the day and tonight. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect due to an expected rain event giving us 1.50 to possibly 2 inches of rain.

By tomorrow morning, the rain will be mostly over, but there will be occasional snow flurries as it turns sharply colder with north winds gusting over 25 mph at times. Clouds will persist most of Saturday. The wind chill may be down in the teens at times for a very uncomfortable day.

A RETURN OF SUNSHINE: That happens on Sunday and most of Monday, but it is going to be very cold Sunday morning. We are using a low of 21 across Central Alabama which means another hard freeze. The Monday low should be about 25. Milder temperatures will set in Monday afternoon and Tuesday with maybe a slight chance of rain again by Tuesday.

EXTREME NORTH ALABAMA: NWS posted a Winter Weather Advisory for counties across the Tennessee Valley. There could be some travel problems developing in that area because of a mix of light freezing rain and sleet. The Advisory is in effect from 3:00 p.m. today until 9:00 Saturday morning. A mix of rain and sleet is expected this afternoon, but no accumulation. For tonight, the precipitation may be a mix of rain, snow, sleet and maybe some light freezing rain. The snow accumulation could amount to around 1 inch across the valley.

ROAMING: The latest snow survey shows that 48% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover early Thursday morning. That will undoubtedly increase dramatically over the next one or two days…down in South Texas, the temperature reached a warm 80 at Laredo Thursday afternoon…the coldest was 24 at Chinook, Montana and 32 below zero at Atqasuk, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Cannot always assume that all dogs are friendly. Walking Little Miss Molly yesterday afternoon we met a new dog—a fully grown boxer. He was being walked by his owner. Molly walked up to him with her tail wagging wanting to welcome him to the community. Instead, he growled and lunged at her. It scared my little pal to death. She ran and sat on my shoes, then she ran under a bush by the walking track and hid. Life goes on.
