...January Behaving Normally...

MORE CHANGES IN ALABAMA WEATHER: Hold on to your hat. We have had a lot of windy weather lately and today is no exception and the wind is not related in any way to thunderstorms. In fact, most areas of the state were sunny or partly sunny this afternoon and west winds were gusting between 20 and 25 mph. Temperatures in the 40s over the northern counties made it feel rather cold. It was in the 50s over the southern part of the state. The NWS continues a Wind Advisory for many parts of the state. Not a good day to be out on the open waters of a lake or river. The wind should diminish tonight.

Look for temperatures to drop into the 20s tonight, because the sky will be mostly clear and the wind will diminish greatly. Clouds will increase Thursday and some rain will reach our area late Thursday night.

THEN, THE MAIN STORY: By Friday morning, an impressive low-pressure area will be centered from Louisiana down through the Western Gulf. A large high-pressure area representing cold arctic air will be over Minnesota and Iowa. In places it is going to be a borderline situation, but we think most of the precipitation on Friday (and it will become widespread) will be rain, except over the extreme north. By Friday night there is a good chance that the rain will become mixed with or change over to light snow and sleet and possibly a bit of freezing rain. We should see some lingering snow flurries for a time Saturday morning. It will be windy and cold all day Saturday with NW winds 15 to 25 mph.

PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS: Across the I-20 corridor, we look for an average of 1.50 to 1.60 inches of rain—most of that coming on Friday. We do not think there will be travel problems involved with the change over Friday night, but we will, of course, watch that closely. By Saturday morning, the low-pressure area should be near the coast of Georgia and South Carolina permitting strong north winds across all of Alabama. The high-pressure system will be over our area Sunday and Sunday night. This will allow temperatures well down into the 20s those two nights.

ROAMING: To the north of Alabama, this storm may bring some winter weather problems. Since they will be on the north side of the low, there is a chance of significant snow, sleet and freezing rain from Oklahoma eastward across Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky and parts of Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. The early morning snow survey showed 45% of the lower 48 with a blanket of snow compared to 63% a month ago today. You now have to go to Iowa, Nebraska and extremely Northern Illinois to find a snow cover in the central part of the nation. We do not have the coldest temperature for the lower 48 this morning, but the coldest in Alaska was 27 below at Beaver Creek.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: away all morning and when we got home, Little Miss Molly pounced on us like we had been gone a week. This also meant a strong request from her for a walk along the track. There are zillions of tiny leaves along both sides of the track and she stops dozens of times to sniff those. I do not know why. But she loves to find a small tree or bush for her bathroom stop. Life goes on.
