NICE STRETCH OF DRY WEATHER: This is the time of year when the old
weather map becomes more and more active and restless. March is normally the
wettest month of the year in our area and also increasingly stormy as the
month goes on. It is also the season for dust storms in the Desert SW and
out on the Plains. On this date in 1989, a massive dust storm brought the
visibility down to zero on I-10 in Cochise County, Arizona. 25 cars crashed
in a chain reaction and two motorists were killed.
Fortunately, we don't have dust storms in Alabama due to our wetter
climate and the weather will not be very restless for several days. To the
contrary, we are expecting milder temperatures and dry weather all the way
through the weekend. For a time, we thought we may have some scattered light
rain or sprinkles on Saturday. We now believe that will stay north of our
area. While nights will still be rather chilly, the afternoons will be just
fine. For tomorrow through Monday, we expect highs in the low to mid 60s.
That is normal for early March.
That area of rain that threatened us overnight slid toward the ESE
passing entirely south of Central Alabama. A steady rain fell in places like
Evergreen and Mobile, but the rain was moving out of SE Alabama this
afternoon.
OUR NEXT RAIN: That should come Monday and Monday night and ending
Tuesday morning. Some showers will start on Monday and increase in number
Monday night. A cold front will bring an end to the showers Tuesday morning.
There is a chance we could have a few thunderstorms during that time, but
not for sure.
SKIPPING AROUND THE COUNTRY: 76 in Imperial and El Centro,
California was the warmest in the USA Wednesday...cold spots this morning
included Clarksburg, Michigan with 21 below zero and Point Lay, Alaska with
35 below...you wouldn't want to be in good old Deadhorse, Alaska today where
it was 31 below with blowing snow and a wind chill of 62 below...to
illustrate how we are getting into our prime severe weather season, on March
3, 1966 an unusually violet F5 tornado in Mississippi tore through parts of
Jackson late in the afternoon. 12 people were killed and 100 injured as a
shopping center was virtually destroyed. In Hinds County, 1,000 homes were
damaged and 19 persons killed. Another six died in Rankin and Leak Counties
and 26 died in Scott County. Total 57 persons killed, 504 injured.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: How would you like to go outdoors only
if you had a leash around your neck and not stay very long each time? I have
often wondered what little Miss Molly thinks as she lives a life like that.
That little bundle of joy is just as happy as a lark. She leads a contented
life and she is rewarded only with lots of playtime and loving and
occasionally a treat. She looks forward to a little tiny treat as much as
humans look forward to two weeks at the beach or the mountains. We need to
take lessons from those little ones, because we humans are somewhat spoiled.
We really enjoyed our early morning walk. Birds were everywhere. It's one of
the few times that we have seen and heard birds talking to us on every bit
of the half-mile walk. One sounded like he was doing the bird version of
weather radio...another one was anxious as we were close to her nest. Life
goes on and I don't know of anything more enjoyable or as interesting. The
world around us is exciting.
