...A Dreary Sunday...

GOOD MORNING! Well, I finally jinxed myself. After making it over two years without a cold, I commented on that fact Wednesday and I am now paying for it. Oh well. It will be great weather for being sick and staying in today with a dreary, chilly rain setting in along with a raw east wind. I’ll enjoy it from the couch.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS THIS MORNING: At the jet stream level, we find a big split flow around a cyclonic circulation over the West. The southern branch of the jet stream carries a moist flow from the Pacific across Old Mexico and over the South. At the surface, we find a convoluted pattern of low pressure systems across the U.S. The first is located over Minnesota, with a trailing cold front that is the leading edge of some very cold air over Canada. Another minor low pressure system is located over the Oklahoma Panhandle. The most important in our weather is a low over the northern Gulf of Mexico. Another important factor is high pressure over the Northeast. This is causing an easterly wind to flow down the east side of the Appalachians. Relatively warm and moist air flowing up and over the airmass over Alabama is causing rain to form over the area this morning. This situation will continue through tonight before the low moves into the Florida Big Bend area.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Showers will end before lunch on Monday and colder air will spill into the area. Dry and cool conditions should remain over the area through Thursday. A disturbance will bring showers back to the area on Friday or Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1717: The Great Snow of 1717. Perhaps the greatest snowstorm in New England History. Actually a series of four snowstorms until March 7 that dumped up to five feet of snow on parts of New England. 95 percent of New England’s deer population was wiped out. The four-day storm dumped three feet of snow on Boston. The city was snowbound for two weeks. Up to six feet of snow was reported north of Boston. Many one-story homes were completely covered by snowdrifts.
