...WINTER STORM WATCH FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING FOR
NORTHEAST ALABAMA AND PARTS OF SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HUNTSVILLE ALABAMA HAS ISSUED A
WINTER STORM WATCH. THE POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF
UP TO A QUARTER INCH FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING OVER THE
AREA EAST OF I-65.

COLD DRY AIR SWEEPING SOUTH THROUGH THE CAROLINAS TODAY WILL MOVE
INTO NORTHEAST ALABAMA AND PARTS OF SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE
TONIGHT AND FRIDAY. A DEVELOPING STORM SYSTEM OVER THE SOUTHERN
PLAINS WILL MOVE EAST DURING THE DAY FRIDAY...SPREADING WARM MOIST
AIR AHEAD OF IT. AS THE MOISTURE DEEPENS AND OVERRUNS THE SHALLOW
COLD AIR MASS IN PLACE...PRECIPITATION WILL START AS EARLY AS FRIDAY
AFTERNOON IN NORTHERN ALABAMA AND SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE.

THE PRECIPITATION WILL START AS A LIGHT MIX OF RAIN AND SLEET
FRIDAY AFTERNOON...BUT WITH GROUND TEMPERATURES RELATIVELY WARM...
NO ICE ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED AT FIRST. AS THE EVENING PROGRESSES
AND LOW-LEVEL TEMPERATURES DROP...A PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN IS
POSSIBLE FOR SEVERAL HOURS FRIDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.
ELEVATED SURFACES SUCH AS TREE LIMBS...POWER LINES...BRIDGES...AND
OVERPASSES WILL ACCUMULATE ICE FIRST...FOLLOWED BY ACCUMULATIONS ON
ROADS.

THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR ICE ACCUMULATION WILL BE IN THE HILLS AND
MOUNTAINS WHERE TEMPERATURES WILL BE BELOW FREEZING LONGER THAN IN
THE LOWER AREAS.

THERE COULD BE CHANGES IN THE TIMING AND PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS...
SO COUNTIES MAY BE ADDED OR REMOVED AS THE EVENT DRAWS CLOSER.

REMEMBER THAT A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE
FOR HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.
STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO...COMMERCIAL RADIO OR TELEVISION
STATIONS...OR YOUR CABLE TELEVISION SERVICE PROVIDER FOR LATER
STATEMENTS CONCERNING THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER
EVENT.
