...Cold Air Arrives Tomorrow...
Clouds should cover much of Alabama this morning thanks to a weak weather
system passing overhead. It might squeeze out a few sprinkles of rain, but
the low level air is very dry, and most places will stay dry. In fact, some
sun should poke through the clouds this afternoon, pushing temperatures back
into the mid 60s.
Another surge of colder air slips in here tonight, and daytime temperatures
tomorrow should be about 10 to 15 degrees cooler. By Friday and Saturday we
will watch colder air trying to ease into the state from the east, draining
down the Appalachian mountains. This "wedge" effect could keep eastern
counties much cooler than the western side of Alabama. And, we will bring in
a chance of mostly light rain at times Friday night into Saturday with
another system moving through the southern branch of the jet stream.
WE NEED RAIN: Birmingham now needs over three inches of rain (3.15" to be
exact) to get back to normal, and we have a pretty decent chance at some
significant rain beginning Sunday afternoon and into Monday of next week
with a stronger storm system moving into the southeast U.S. In fact, some of
the longer range computer data suggests parts of the deep south might even
have a severe weather threat by Monday if unstable air gets involved.
COLDER DAYS? Long range model data suggests a pattern might be developing
that would put Alabama and the deep south in a rather cold temperature
regime in the February 5-15 time frame. Any warming trends during this 10
day stretch should be brief.
ROAMING: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Laredo, TX with 84.
Yesterday's high in Caribou, ME was only 6 degrees.
