...Clouds Hang Tough...
That cloud deck that slunk in here overnight has already outworn its
welcome on this Sunday afternoon. The mid-level moisture extends back
into Texas and isn't going anywhere fast, so a mostly cloudy day is
now expected across Central Alabama. An approaching front will bring
showers to western sections as early as late tonight.
RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: With mostly cloudy skies, highs this afternoon
will edge into the lower and middle 50s for the most part. By
tonight, a strong upper level disturbance will be sweeping southeast
out of the Upper Midwest. It will spin up a surface low over the
Great Lakes. This will push a cold front towards Alabama. Ahead of
this front, showers will enter Northwest Alabama late tonight and push
across the state during the day on Monday. The rain will end by
evening and skies should clear by Tuesday morning. Seasonably cool
and dry conditions will prevail through Thanksgiving.
LATE WEEK STORM SYSTEM: By the time you sit down to turkey on
Thursday, showers and storms will be building to our west and they
will be heading our way. Clouds will increase steadily over Alabama
during the day and a rogue shower could pop up late in the day.
Showers will move into the state from the west late Thursday night.
This system increasingly looks like it could be a good rainmaker for
us, and it will likely be accompanied by thunderstorms. Everything
will depend on the track of the surface low that develops. Doesn't
look like anything will get out of hand, but we will monitor the
possibility of severe weather as it moves our way. Rainfall amounts
are looking like they will average an inch or more.
NEXT WEEKEND AND BEYOND: We need the rain, but we would just as soon
get it out of the way before the Iron Bowl. Rain and storms could
last well into Friday night, with some lingering light rain into the
morning hours on Saturday. The game is at 2:30 p.m., so hopefully,
the precipitation will be out of the way. It will be breezy, cool and
mostly cloudy during the game with temperatures in the 50s. No model
consistency in the 8-15 day time period. Wait. Model consistency in
the 8-15 day time period. That's an oxymoron. Sorry. Just suffice
to say that it could be interesting.
HOLIDAY TRAVEL ALERT: No really big problems expected this year. The
lake effect snow belt regions will see some heavy snows Tuesday and
Wednesday. A storm system over the Northeast will bring mostly heavy
rain to coastal areas of New England, with heavy snow over inland
areas. Big snows could affect New England again by Sunday. Over the
Southeast, heavy rain and storms will be the problem Friday into
Saturday. Elsewhere, may your travels be smooth!
ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Hurricane Iwa struck the Hawaiian islands of
Niah, Kauai and Oahu. Winds gusted above 130 mph and sustained winds
were near 100 mph. Honolulu had gust to 81 mph. Total damage was well
over $200 million. Iwa was the first hurricane to strike Hawaii in 23
years since Dot had hit the islands in August 1959.
