...Showers Possible This Week...

Was it just me, or did the air and the sky have a little of a
September feel to it late yesterday afternoon around the Birmingham
area? Maybe it is the football magazines on the stands, but with the
fairly low dew points still in place around the Magic City, a brisk
little easterly breeze and some stratocumulus clouds around, I could
feel fall. It is not far away.

DROUGHT STILL WITH US: Showers developed over Georgia during the
early morning hours. Some of them migrated into eastern Alabama and
others formed. Some of them dumped some heavy rainfall amounts, but
since they were slow moving, the areal coverage was small. Coverage
east of I-65 was about 25%, west of the interstate, well less than
10%. We have enjoyed some decent showers over most of the area over
the past month, but make no bones about, the drought is still with us.
While the exception, category five drought area has shrunk ever so
slightly, it is still a large part of the northern half of Alabama.
Virtually all of the northern half of the state with the exception of
the Northwest corner is at least in the Extreme Drought category. The
rainfall deficit in Birmingham has actually grown slightly over the
past few weeks. So while we have slowed down the rate of growth of
the shortfall, it is still a big one. And it isn't getting going to
drop substantially, at least not in the foreseeable future.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Our much advertised upper level low will be moving
westward over the next couple of days. As it does, it will increase
our shower and thunderstorm chances. Those chances will be low today,
with the surface trough from yesterday still hanging around.
Scattered showers and storms will be with us each day Tuesday through
Friday. An approaching front will increase showers and storm chances
at least by Saturday, lasting into Sunday. Again, no drought busting
rains in sight

TROPICS: A tropical wave and upper low are interacting near Bermuda.
Wind shear is relatively light and there is an outside chance some
development could occur today before it moves northward over cooler
waters.

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: A powerful thunderstorm made street lamps
necessary in the middle of the afternoon in Atlanta Georgia. Over
four inches of rain during the 2 hour thunderstorm caused a foot of
water to flood Union Station.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Tornadoes hit South Carolina in wake of dying
Hurricane Danny, including one that leveled a duplex apartment and
killed a 32-year-old woman. A Charlotte, North Carolina, railroad
trestle gave way, plunging a CSX locomotive into Little Sugar Creek.
Crew members escaped unharmed. 6.88 inches of rain fell in
Charlotte, breaking the 24 hour record of 5.91 inches that had been
set in July 1944. A record 6.14 inches fell between midnight at 2
p.m. Up to 10 inches fell in other parts of South Central North
Carolina.
