NO MAJOR DAY-TO-DAY CHANGE: It is that time of year when Alabama
weather can get stuck in a rut with the daily forecast sounding
almost identical to the day before and for several days ahead. That
is the situation we are in now. The number of showers and
thunderstorms depend greatly on subtle changes of various weather
elements. Some of those are difficult to detect.

For example, yesterday a number of communities got rain, including
some big amounts, because the thunderstorms were literally crawling
across the Alabama countryside. Indeed, they stood still at times
permitting rain over the same community for several hours in a row.
More than 4 inches of rain fell in the Bynum community east of
Anniston, while the Anniston Airport at Oxford received only a very
small amount. Today showers and storms were hard to find. Some will
still form later this afternoon and this evening.

For the rest of the week and through the weekend, we are going to
mention scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. If you are
lucky, you could get some good rain amounts on some days, while on
other days you will not get a drop. It is impossible to tell you,
even early in the day, yes or no for your rain later that day.

Despite some good rain events over the last two to three weeks, we
are still in a drought and it is going to take a lot more juice
falling from the sky to greatly alleviate that situation. 2007 rain
deficiency as of today:

18.28 inches at Birmingham Airport
21.29 Anniston Airport
21.87 Tuscaloosa Airport
18.98 Huntsville Airport
15.44 Muscle Shoals

Mobile has fared better. They have received 10 inches so far this month.

AT THE BEACH: Scattered showers and thunderstorms every single day—a
better than average chance through at least Saturday, with highs 88
to 90.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Even though we are almost 2 months into the 2007
hurricane season, still no significant storm. That does not mean that
we will not have an active season, however, no signs of development
at least for the next several days.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Fascinated by the official forecast for
Bismarck today. It says mostly sunny and breezy with high 105-109.
They did not even use the word hot. Yesterday it was 108 in Killdeer,
North Dakota and 110 in Miles City, Montana.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is at the beauty shop
getting a haircut, so for the second day in a row, I will hardly see
her. Much playtime tonight, however. Sure enjoyed the trip yesterday
with the 33/40 weather interns and the 33/40 weather crew. They tied
me to my chair and made me eat three small bowls of banana pudding. I
did not severely object and life goes on......
