CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG
Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's
safe to dig.

projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.
One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours prior to
digging:
* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!

disruptions to your neighborhood.

...A Nice Spring Weekend Ahead...
DRIER WEATHER: Drier air will slowly work into Alabama today, and most
communities will be rain-free. The clearing process will be rather
slow, however, as some low level moisture will remain trapped in the
lower 5,000 feet of the atmosphere. The sun should begin to break out
in spots this afternoon, and by tonight we will be generally clear as
the dry air takes over. Any lingering showers today should be
generally confined to the southern half of the state.
THE WEEKEND: Tomorrow looks like a beautiful day, with a good supply
of sunshine and a high in the mid to upper 70s following a rather
chilly morning for mid-May. A disturbance will bring some scattered
clouds to the state on Sunday, but the low levels will remain dry, and
at this point the chance of significant rain looks relatively small,
although we can't rule out a shower in isolated spots. The high Sunday
will be in the upper 70s, a few degrees below average for this time of
the year.
A quick peek at next week reveals the best chance of rain should come
during the latter half of the week, perhaps on Thursday or Friday.
Long range model data shows a summer-like pattern by Memorial Day
weekend, with warm and muggy conditions and just a few scattered,
mainly afternoon showers or storms.
SOAKED: A year ago today, Birmingham Airport had received a mere 9.68
inches of rain and we were showing a deficit of over 13 inches! By
yesterday afternoon, Birmingham had received 1.82 inches, bringing our
2008 total to 24.70, a SURPLUS of 1.87. Nobody complaining about that
for sure. Some of the heavier rain totals yesterday included: 3.80" at
the Tuscaloosa Airport, 3.07" at Northwood Lake (near Northport),
2.93" at Pleasant Grove, 2.74" in Hoover (near Spain Park High
School), 2.60" at Alexander City, 2.54" at Inverness, 2.50" at the ABC
33/40 Studio in
Riverchase, 2.40" in the Russet Woods section of Hoover, 2.37" at
Greystone Farms, 2.14" at Marion, 2.13" in Helena, 1.88" at Jemison,
1.82" at the Birmingham Airport, 1.73" at Trussville, and
1.56" at Pell City.
It is interesting to note that despite the heavy rain in Tuscaloosa
yesterday, a rain deficiency for the year of 1.69" still exists. The
official rain total for Anniston was 1.69", but they still have a
deficiency of 3.18".
A few tornado warnings were issued for counties in South Alabama
yesterday, but no significant damage was reported. There was no severe
weather across North Alabama due to the stable, rain-cooler air.
ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was
Death Valley, CA with 109 degrees. Coldest spots were both in Alaska;
Atqasuk and Point Lay reported a low of 21 degrees. A flood warning is
in effect today for the Sucarnoochee River at Livingston (Alabama),
where some flooding of pastures is expected.
