...Storms Next Week...

Skies became a little cloudier that we expected on Saturday,
especially across North Alabama. The clouds were generally debris
from showers located to the west of us that found themselves caught up
in northwesterly flow on the front side of a ridge over Texas. The
clouds even produced a few light sprinkles and some virga, which is
precipitation which evaporates before it reaches the ground. The
clouds acted a blanket for some spots overnight, keeping temperatures
a few degrees warmer than they would have been otherwise.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: High pressure at the surface is centered near Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina on this Sunday morning. It is maintaining a
broad southeasterly flow over the South. Aloft, we find ourselves
under a northwesterly flow aloft still, with the upper ridge still
centered from Nebraska down into northern Texas. A few clouds will
stream across the area from time to time in the upper flow today, but
we still should enjoy a good deal of sunshine.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: The upper ridge will shift eastward to start the
week. We should see plenty of sunshine on Monday, with just a few
clouds mixed in. Highs will be in the 70s both days. Lows will be in
the 40s Monday morning. Increasing southeasterly winds will send
moisture levels upward by Monday night and Tuesday, and lows Tuesday
morning will be in the lower 50s for the most part. To the west of
Alabama, a strong storm system will bring severe weather to areas from
Texas to North Dakota. This potential severe weather will shift into
the Arklatex on Tuesday as the powerful low lifts northward into the
Dakotas and Minnesota. There could be enough lift across Alabama to
produce a few showers during the day on Tuesday, but rain coverage and
amounts will be relatively low. By late Tuesday, the big upper t
rough to our west will be shifting our way, setting the stage for rain
and storms.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: The lumbering upper trough will push toward
Alabama, spinning up a surface low to our west. Showers and storms
will spread across the state on Wednesday. Most of the dynamics will
be well to our north by that time, but there still is a chance that we
could see some severe weather. The front will stall across the area
on Wednesday. More rain and storms will develop on Thursday, bringing
another dose of decent rainfall to the area. Again, there is some
potential for severe weather, but nothing looks significant for now.
The main event may come Friday and Saturday as a series of vigorous
surface lows develop along the front and move northeastward. Heavy
rain and severe weather will be possible.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Louisiana residents near the flooded
Mississippi River met with unwelcome visitors: snakes and alligators
displaced by the river. New Orleans officials warned joggers and
other visitors to the recreation area along Lake Ponchartrain to watch
out for the slithering reptiles. The river, at its highest level
since the 1927 flooding, sent residents to shelters and completely
surrounded the state prison at Angola, where prisoners labored to
shore up the last remaining levee with sandbags.
