...Mostly Dry Through Sunday...
COLD FRONT ARRIVES TODAY: Often in March, when a cold front blows
through Alabama you wind up dealing with issues like heavy rain,
severe storms, or tornadoes. That is not the case today, despite a
cold front passing through this afternoon. Due to limited moisture and
atmospheric lift, any showers on the front should be very isolated,
and mainly north of Birmingham. The chance of any one spot getting wet
is only about one in ten. Cooler air will follow the front late
tonight, and we should be in the low 40s early tomorrow.
TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Dry weather is the story with pleasant days
and cool nights. The high tomorrow and Saturday will be in the mid to
upper 60s, followed by a high close to 70 degrees on Sunday. We are
expecting a low near 40 degrees early Saturday, with 30s for the
normally colder places along with some risk of scattered light frost.
The dry weather will linger into the first two days of next week with
a slow warming trend.
NEXT MAJOR RAIN EVENT: The medium range global computer models
continue to suggest the next big rain event here will come over the
latter half of next week; for now it looks like a good chance of
showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday, with some
potential for strong thunderstorms. Much colder air will follow that
rain, and there will be some risk of a late season freeze sometime in
the March 27-29 time frame. A little too early to be specific at this
time, but we still believe it is too early for planting any crop that
could be damaged by freezing temperatures. While the average date of
the last freeze is March 23, we have seen freezing temperatures here
as late as April 23. We can have some sharp cold snaps well into April.
SPRING ARRIVES TOMORROW: Spring officially arrives at 6:44 a.m.
tomorrow, the time of the vernal equinox, when the sun is directly
above the earth's equator. During the equinox, the length of night and
day across the world is nearly, but not entirely, equal. This is
because the day is slightly longer in places that are further away
from the equator, and because the sun takes longer to rise and set in
these locations. Furthermore, the sun also does not set straight down,
but it also moves in a horizontal direction.
During the March equinox, the length of daylight is about 12 hours and
eight to nine minutes in areas that are about 30 degrees north or
south of the equator, while areas that are 60 degrees north or south
of the equator observe daylight for about 12 hours and 16 minutes.
Many regions around the equator have a daylight length about 12 hours
and six-and-a-half minutes during the March equinox.
