...One More Round of Rain...
Rain overspread Alabama again during the overnight. Rainfall amounts
were generally light again with this second round of rain, but some
heavier showers did dump some respective hourly amounts. At the
Birmingham Airport, between midnight and 1 a.m., 0.43 inches of rain
fell. The rain totals had been disappointing at Birmingham through
much of Saturday (we had been expecting as much as three inches of
rain through the weekend, and amounts had been well short of that
until last night. The Birmingham rain total for the past three days
stands at 2.06 inches.

DROUGHT: Someone asked if there was any drought left given all the
rain that we have experienced lately. Much of North Central Alabama
is in good shape now, from the I-59 corridor northward up to the
Tennessee Valley. The northern tier of counties is now officially
listed as abnormally dry. The entire southeastern two thirds of the
state is now at least abnormally dry. An axis of moderate drought
extends from Montgomery through Macon and Lee Counties. Parts of
Mobile and Baldwin Counties are in a moderate drought situation.

OUR FORECAST: A weak surface low is located in South Alabama late
this morning. It is lifting a warm front northward across Southeast
Alabama and South Georgia. Behind it, a cold front trails to near
Mobile and into the Gulf. The upper features drive our weather, and
the object causing our current weather traffic jam is a big high
pressure system up at about 18,000 feet over Cuba, South Florida and
the Bahamas. To the west, the main upper level disturbance was
swinging out of Oklahoma and Texas. It will produce one more round of
rain overnight and early tomorrow morning before sweeping out the
moisture Monday afternoon. This will then set the stage for a nice
week, with mainly dry and springlike conditions expected. Another
trough and frontal system will swing our way on Thursday, but rain
chances look small, and it will only be slightly cooler behind this
system.

SPACE SHUTTLE FORECAST: Forecasting the weather for Space Shuttle
launches and landings is a critical part of the process. The weather
rules for a shuttle launch are very clear and the launch weather
officer and her team will call for a no-go if any of them are
violated. Fortunately for us hoping to watch the Shuttle lift off
tonight at 07:43:46 p.m. EDT, the meteorologists say there is an 80%
of acceptable weather conditions at launch time. The main concern is
for a slight chance of a low cloud ceiling at Kennedy Space Center.
Two transatlantic abort landing (TAL) sites are forecast to have
acceptable weather today. Only one TAL site is required to be "go."
There are no weather concerns at the alternate landing site at Edwards
Air Force Base in California.

ON THIS DATE IN 1716: The aurora borealis was conspicuously absent in
skies over Europe between 1645-1715. In fact, not a single aurora
borealis was observed by Royal Astronomers between 1645 and 1708. The
absence of the beautiful glowing displays in the night sky was caused
by a lack of solar activity during that time. Astronomer E. W.
Maunder pointed out the sunspot minimum between 1645 and 1715. It is
named for him: the Maunder Minimum. The lack of solar activity
probably contributed to the global cooling that led to the Little Ice
Age, a period of cooling that lasted from 1400 until 1850.
