...Snow Gradually Ending...
COUNTRYSIDE LIKE A CHRISTMAS CARD: A good part of Alabama has had snow overnight and today, but it will be gradually ending late today and tonight. Some of the heavier amounts were down in south/central and SE Alabama in places like Auburn and Troy and in Sumter County over on the west side. One of the first reports of difficult driving conditions came from the small town of Cuba south of Livingston. Bridges and roads had become quite slushy by late morning.
We will not know a full list of snow depth reports until tonight or tomorrow morning. It was expected that places like Troy, Auburn and Montgomery could get 3 or more inches. Across north/central Alabama, including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston we were forecasting 1 to 2 inches.
By early afternoon, the great Alabama countryside looked more like a beautiful white Christmas or a Kinkade painting. The snow was wet enough to cling to the barren trees. It appeared that much of the Birmingham area had a 1-inch cover by midafternoon. Even deep in South Alabama, there were travel problems. US-43 in North Mobile County saw bridges ice up and snow accumulating instead of melting when hitting the ground.
A BLACK ICE PROBLEM: Even as cold as it is, the snow cover will melt some on black asphalt highways and bridges. Temperatures will go below freezing early tonight, so black ice could become quite a problem. It is clear ice, so it becomes the same color as the pavement and difficult to see.
REST OF THE WEEKEND: Quite cold tonight dropping to near 22. Clouds will increase late Saturday and on Sunday. Some rain by Sunday afternoon, possibly changing to snow after midnight. Monday will be very uncomfortable with morning snow flurries. High only in the 30s and NW winds up to 25 mph. Back to the low 20s Tuesday morning.
STORM ALERT 2010: The next program is next Thursday night at Hale County High School in Moundville. I was once a student there. The program starts at 7:00 and is over by 8:15. The 33/40 weather crew will present some very educational and interesting programs.
IS THIS POSSIBLE: We have seen some ideas bounced around today, that this could become a situation where all 48 states had some measureable snow at the same time. That would become incredibly unusual. Even North Florida got some measureable snow out of this storm. The official NWS Snow Survey this morning showed 67.1% of the lower 48 with a snow cover. It was so extensive in the central part of the country that there was a blanket of snow all the way from Canada to south Louisiana.
ROAMING: Cold temperatures this morning: 10 below zero at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska and 17 below at International Falls, Minnesota...it was 103 this afternoon in San Juan, Argentina, but it is summer there.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Never ever know what to expect when walking with my little girl. This morning, Molly and I were coming back home from the north end of the walking track. She saw little Bo, the new puppy, come out in his backyard on a bathroom break. She pulled as hard on her leash as possible trying to drag me down into his backyard. She was not looking and did not know that little Dino had escaped and was approaching us like a Japanese bullet train. He did not have a leash. Just before getting to Molly, he became airborne and landed on the back of Molly. She had not seen him and it scared the living nightlights out of her. Then we had three little dogs in a frenzy running in circles and enjoying life. It made my morning. Life goes on.
