COLD AND UNSETTLED: Dry and cold weather is the story for Alabama today, with intervals of sunshine and a high in the low 40s. A brisk northwest wind will make it feel colder. Expect another significant freeze tonight with a low in the mid 20s by daybreak tomorrow. Then, we stay dry tomorrow, but clouds will be on the increase during the day in advance of the next storm system approaching in the southern branch of the jet stream.

SOUTHERN SNOW FRIDAY: Confidence in snow on Friday across the Deep South is high, but the details are challenging to nail down due to conflicting computer model output. A deep low pressure area is forecast to develop over the northern Gulf of Mexico Friday, and promises to spread snow into the Gulf Coast region. The best moisture will be over Louisiana, South Mississippi, South Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle, for now it seems like the "sweet spot" for accumulating snow will be generally along a line from Jackson, MS to Meridian, MS to Demopolis to Montgomery and on to Opelika, or along U.S. Highway 80. Snow totals in the general area could be in the 1 to 3 inch range. Accumulating snow is possible Friday as far south as U.S. 84, or along a line from Monroeville to Evergreen to Dothan.

Farther north, we are forecasting only light snow for now for the I-20 corridor (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston), with flurries to the north over the northern third of the state. It is interesting to note this system could bring snow as far south as I-10, or for places like Mobile, Crestview, and Tallahassee.

TIMING: The best chance of snow will be during the day Friday, generally in the 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. time frame. The snow will begin over South Mississippi after midnight tomorrow night.

REMEMBER: This is a low confidence forecast, which means there is a reasonable chance that the forecast snow amounts and placement could change during the next 36 hours, so stay tuned.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday looks dry and cold, but an Alberta Clipper type system blows in here from the northwest on Sunday, and will bring some risk of light snow or snow flurries. Then, even colder air arrives early next week. Parts of North Alabama could have a hard time getting above freezing Monday with an icy north wind. We will drop to near 20 degrees by Tuesday morning, with teens likely for the colder valleys across North and Central Alabama.

STORM ALERT 2010 IS COMING TO WALKER COUNTY TOMORROW NIGHT: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be tomorrow night at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat!
