...The Weather Is On The Move...

MOTHER NATURE THROWING FAST BALLS: The lady known as Mother Nature sure is keeping us on our toes. She has rolled out a very interesting winter for us so far and the story continues to unfold. We will go through quite a few changes this week, including a sharp change to colder and even some sort of a snow threat.

We also have to glance over our shoulder toward the north to keep track of how far south there is a blanket of snow. Sometimes we have to use our weather models with a grain of salt when we are projecting temperatures. A snow pack as far south as Tennessee and Arkansas can alter both our low and high temperatures from what the models say.

NOW DOWN TO BUSINESS: This is a general schedule of what we expect. A slight chance of rain this evening becoming more widespread after midnight; a steady cold rain on Tuesday; a rather fast-moving cold front will pass the Birmingham area by midday; the wind will shift around to the NW to 15-25 mph with a sharp drop in temperature. We are projecting 46 for a high, but it could be near freezing by 7:00 or 8:00 tomorrow evening. Windy cold weather continues on Wednesday with a high struggling to reach 40 and lows in the mid 20s. Another cold morning Thursday, but clouds will move in by afternoon.

OUR MAIN SUBJECT OF INTEREST: Let us go ahead and blame it on the Gulf of Mexico, because she is going to give us another low-pressure area forming over the Northern Gulf by Thursday night and early Friday. The low is expected to track eastward. There are some indications that this low will be further south than the last one. Meanwhile, cold air will still be in place and there is some risk of snow with a better chance being over the south half of the state and maybe even better for the extreme south. If the low tracks as far south as late information indicates, even the south may not get very much. The most important sentence in this whole discussion is: it is too early to be specific about Friday. We can finetune it much better tomorrow.

There was some snow across the Tennessee Valley this morning—as much as 2 or 3 inches in places—and there were even a few travel problems.

ROAMING: Washington and Baltimore really caught it over the weekend. Washington did not get quite as much snow as projected, but enough to essentially shut down the city. West of Baltimore there was one report of 34 inches. And now they are expecting more snow, especially tomorrow...cold spots this morning included 23 below zero at Jordan, Montana and 33 below at Barrow, Alaska where the wind chill was 45 below...the morning snow survey shows 62% of the lower 48 covered by snow. This does not count the additional snow in Arkansas, West Tennessee and extreme North Alabama early today.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: As I have written many times, Little Miss Molly is a real diplomat. She loves people as much as other dogs. This morning we met a new neighbor who has a cute little Dachsshund. He runs across his backyard trying to reach Molly every time we go by until the end of the leash stops him. Molly also had another rapid play session with little Bo who weighs half of what Molly does, but he can out maneuver Molly. In fact, he runs circles around Molly so fast that she gets a bit frightened and comes and sits on my shoe. Translation: please pick me up. I tried to catch up on ballgames with Molly over the weekend, but I really believe if we had 10 games each day, she would still want more. She is a dynamo of energy. I watched the Super Bowl last night, however, the majority owner who has an interest in football less than zero, watched Sound of Music. Life goes on.
