WARMING TREND STARTS CHRISTMAS: It looks as if some parts of North Alabama
will have the second day in a row that the temperature failed to reach the
freezing mark. The good news is that a warming trend will start Saturday,
but it will not be that super fast, because we have a good snow pack as
close by as West Tennessee. North winds blowing off a snow field often fools
the weather models and keeps temperatures lower than you would normally
think. Even so, by the middle of next week we look for high temperatures to
be in the 60s. We also expect a generally dry 5 or 6 days in a row.

The clouds that were over us today will clear out tonight and by daybreak
temperatures will be well down in the teens. Even Saturday night will have
mid 20s. We should get well above freezing Saturday and the warming trend
will continue after that. See our day-by-day forecast.

We're also watching another low pressure area forming in the Gulf of Mexico.
Amazingly, that could bring a mix of light sleet, light snow and light rain
to places like New Orleans, Gulf Shores, Mobile and Pensacola tonight and
early tomorrow. No accumulation expected. We have a report from Jake
Skellett, WBRZ-TV, Baton Rouge, that they were getting a mix of light snow
flurries and sleet with the temperature still only 31 at noon!.

A REAL DEEP FREEZE: The temperature plunged to a bitter cold 45 below zero
this morning in NE Minnesota in the town of Embarrass. It was 41 below at
Babbit and 35 below at International Falls in the same general area. In
Alaska, it was 53 below at Bettles with 30 inches of snow on the ground.
Valdez, Alaska has 47 inches of snow on the ground and the wind chill was
running close to minus 60 in parts of Northern Alaska.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL WEATHER: No additional significant precipitation is expected
in a 500-mile radius of Birmingham for tonight and Christmas Day, although
showers will be moving across the Florida Peninsula. If you're traveling to
the west and north, be advised that a heavy snow cover remains from West
Tennessee across Kentucky and much of Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.
Evansville, Indiana, on the Ohio River, had a record 19 inches of snow from
this historic storm.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Thanksgiving and Christmas are my favorite
holidays. Hope you will excuse me as I go into a reflective mood. There is
so much that I have to be thankful for that I sometimes feel guilty. One
thing is little Miss Molly. She has brought a lot of joy and pleasure to my
life. I was the member of the family that was reluctant to own another dog
based on us having bad luck with our previous three. Boy, was I wrong. Molly
loves everybody and she doesn't like for me to get out of her sight. I guess
you can call that "doggy-stalking," but I love it...amazing how a little
9-pound animal can be so loving and faithful. If something were to happen to
little Molly, I would cry buckets of big tears. With 6 grandkids over
Wednesday, Molly got no sleep whatsoever so she slept almost all day
yesterday. When she and I went for a walk early this morning, it was bona
fide, bone-chilling cold. Even I, a very hot-natured guy, put on a heavy
coat..we have received over 2,000 emails about Molly since beginning this
little update two years ago...I treasure every one...your interest is most
appreciated. We wish you a Merry Christmas!
