GOOD AFTERNOON: Merry Christmas to everyone out there on this Christmas
Day. We have been tracking wintry precipitation across Gulf Coastal regions
overnight. Some sleet is expected over Southwest Alabama today, and there
may be wintry precip tonight south of I-85 where a Winter Storm Watch is in
effect. Nothing like that here, though, clearing skies expected overnight.

OUR FORECAST: Is an easy one. It is a temperature forecast until Friday
at least, as high pressure controls our weather. We will see freezes for
the next three nights, but things will continue to gradually warm up until
we see highs in the 60s later in the coming week. Our next chance of rain
will come late on Friday night into Saturday as a cold front approaches from
the northwest. Good news! New Years Eve may be dry. Another wet weather
system will slog through early in the first week of the new year, but no
cold air is in sight.

TEXAS SNOWS: While we were dreaming of a white Christmas here in Alabama,
folks in South and Southeast Texas were waking up to one. Some amazing
snowfall amounts from the Houston area:

Ganado (74 miles SW Houston) 12 inches
Louise (67 miles SW Houston) 12 inches
Bay City (57 miles SW Houston) 10 inches
Jamaica Beach (Galveston Island) 4 inches
Galveston 3 inches
Pearland (Just S of Houston) 2 inches
From the Corpus Christi area, some equally impressive amounts:
Corpus Christi Airport (CCP) 4.4 inches
(This sets new single storm record for city)
Port Aransas (On Gulf) 4 inches
Victoria (60 NNE CCP) 12 inches
Rockport (on Aransas Bay) 6 inches
Beeville (40 NW CCP) 10 inches
Port OConnor 8 inches
Port Lavaca 8 inches

Up to a foot of snow is widespread across Goliad and Jim Wells Counties.
Measurable snow has only fallen seven times in 107 years in Corpus Christi.

Brownsville picked up one and one half inches, setting a December record.
It was first measurable snow since 1895 in the South Texas city.

LOOKING IN THE RECORD BIN: Snow cover does wonders for record low
temperatures. Check out these frigid morning readings across the Midwest:

Evansville IN -11
Fort Wayne IN -15
Paducah KY -8

Indianapolis had nine inches on the ground this morning, this most on any
Christmas morning there.

ON THIS DATE IN 1974: Tropical Cyclone Tracy blasted Darwin, Australia with
150 mph winds, damaging or destroying nearly 90 percent of the city's
buildings. Tracy would be the worst cyclone ever to hit Australia 47
people died in the storm. Because Darwin seemed to be protected by an
offshore island, planners did not expect the city would ever experience
really high winds. Early on Christmas Eve, Tracy steamed right into Darwin.
Unaware, residents went on with their holiday festivities. The storm raged
through the pre-dawn hours, with the eye passing directly over Darwin about
4 am. Many residents were caught outside when the lull passed.
