ACCENT ON MILDNESS: As we look out across the great USA
weatherscape this afternoon, we find that temperatures in the 60s have
surged as far northward as Iowa and Alabama is sharing in that mild weather
also. It wasn't too long ago that we had low temperatures in the teens and
highs below freezing. We don't see any indication of any sharp change to
colder for at least 7 to 9 days.

Naturally, with the milder temperatures and a southerly wind setting
in, moisture will gradually increase. That is already showing up in some
early morning low clouds and patchy fog. That will be the story for the next
several days. A few showers may show up on Saturday and Sunday, but it still
looks like our better chance of showers will be early in the new week. There
could be some decent rainfall amounts later Monday and Tuesday.
Low temperatures this morning varied from the upper 30s in some of the
valleys to the upper 40s near the coast.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Alabama-Minnesota game in Nashville at
the Music City Bowl Friday, the chance of a shower during the game seems to
have lessened a bit to only about 20%. It will be mostly cloudy, but mild,
with temperatures near 58 at kickoff and a high of 62 during the game. Down
in New Orleans at the Sugar Bowl, Auburn will meet Virginia Tech Monday
night. The weather will be "perfect" for the game since it's played in the
Louisiana Superdome. But if you're traveling down to the Big Easy, very mild
weather is expected Saturday, Sunday and Monday with highs 70 to 75. There
will be some scattered showers and maybe even some thunderstorms.

ICEBOX WEATHER: Lows this morning:

9 below at Presque Isle, Maine
42 below at Northway, Alaska
42 below at Dawson in the Yukon Territory

LOOKING AROUND THE WEATHERSCAPE: Still lots of action in the
west...the huge west coast storm has now dumped 16.11 inches of rain on
Matilija Canyon in Ventura County. Even downtown Los Angeles has been
inundated with 6.85 inches of rain, Pasadena 7.58 and Beverly Hills
5.02...in the mountains, all of this moisture translates into snowfall by
the foot. Already 10 inches have fallen near Taos, New Mexico.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Away for a time last evening to enjoy
a game of Rook and a nice meal out and to visit friends. Little Miss Molly
knows every signal that we're about ready to leave home. If someone is
taking a shower, curling their hair, you name it, she knows we are about
ready to leave. She gets a forlorn look on her face as if we are doing her
an injustice. As soon as we go out through the garage, she heads to the
front door where there are windowpanes down to the floor. When we drive
away, we see her standing on her hind legs with her little face pressed
against the window trying to get a last glimpse of us as we leave. We have
to clean that window because her little nose keeps it smeared. Life goes on.
