GOOD AFTERNOON: I am the Championship Game of my fantasy football league
on this 16th week of the NFL season. I will be watching this day's games
intently... Go Corey Dillon! Go Antonio Gates! Go Trussville Twisters!
DULL FORECAST: After a seeming several weeks of challenging forecasts,
this week's package is basically an easy one. The big news will be a slow
warm up that will leave up well above normal in the temperature department
by midweek.

STARTING FROM THE TOP: At about 35,000 feet that is. If you were an air
parcel at this level out over the Pacific, you might be giddy with
excitement, like you were about to get on the Mind Bender, or the Great
American Scream Machine. Oh wait, those are from my day. I don't know what
today's great roller coasters are, but you get the picture. The jet stream
makes a huge dip over the eastern Pacific, soars into a majestic ridge over
the western United States and does another dramatic dip into the Deep South
with the axis of the trough centered just about over I-65. It then races out
over the Atlantic toward Europe.

In the coming week, the eastern trough will lift out to the northeast. The
western ridge will move to the east and flatten with time, The big Pacific
trough will lean over so much that it will "cut off" into a big upper level
low off the California coast. If this happens, the models kind of go
haywire. But we do know that this pattern will allow our warm up to happen.

At the surface, a big subtropical ridge of high pressure will take a
position off the East Coast of the United States, ridging back into the
Gulf of Mexico. As it does, out winds will become southerly and allow
moisture levels to increase and temperatures to moderate.

This will be a temperature forecast through late in the week. 50s by
tomorrow, 60s by Wednesday, and mid 60s late in the week. Those readings
will feel very nice.

By Thursday, low pressure will be located over South Dakota. A long warm
front will be overtaking much of the eastern half of the country, resulting
in readings being twenty five degrees above normal in some areas. This same
low will be trailing a cold front back into western Texas. This front will
progress eastward and be west of Little Rock on Friday. It will then run
into the proverbial brick wall of the subtropical ridge. By that time, the
airmass over Alabama will be relatively moist. There will be a chance of
showers on New Years Eve, but I think that the better chance of rain will
hold off until Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City records
its greatest 24-hour snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th,
Central Park in New York, New York, received its greatest snowfall of 26.4
inches, while 32 inches fell on some suburbs. Because the storm was not
accompanied by strong winds, it was not a blizzard. Holiday travel was
brought to a standstill. 27 deaths occurred as a result of the storm. Snow
removal of the estimated 10 million tons of snow cost over $8 million. 19
inches of snow fell in just six hours at White Plains NY.
