...Warm Up Continues...

GOOD MORNING! On the evening of December 29, 1862, while camped
outside Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Confederate General Braxton Bragg forbade
his men to burn their campfires despite cold temperatures and a chill
drizzle. He was planning an early morning attack on the men of Union
General William Rosecrans. The resulting Battle of Stones River was a
deadly one, with over 13,000 Federal and 10,000 Rebel casualties. I walked
that battlefield for three hours yesterday. A humbling thought: out of
6,500 Federal graves in the U.S. Cemetery, 2,300 of the names are only known
to God.

FOR TODAY: It was cloudy all day here in Nashville yesterday.
Those same clouds affected much of Northwest Alabama also. Warm air
advection in the lower mid levels of the atmosphere produced the clouds.
The increase in our moisture will lead to more low clouds and patchy fog
this morning. The clouds should burn away enough to allow partial sunshine
by late morning.

REST OF THE WEEK: Moisture levels will continue to increase through
the end of the week in conjunction with an increasing southerly flow. Some
showers could break out New Years Eve or New Years day, but the chance will
be rather small. Chances will increase a bit Sunday and be fairly likely on
Monday, but confidence in the specifics is low. There are signs of a change
to colder around January 7th.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: New York picked up 12 inches of snow as the
first major East Coast storm of the winter struck on a weekend, turning the
Big Apple into a winter wonderland. Theatres and businesses were still open
as preparations for the big New Year's Eve celebration were still underway.

All three Big Apple Airports were closed. In Philadelphia, the dire
predications were unfounded as the storm passed mainly east of the area.
The Eagles were making special preparations for their Sunday playoff game.
Snow blowers were brought in to clear snow from the stands, because Eagle
fans have the nasty habit of shower opponents and referees with snowballs!
