...Zillions of Shoppers...
A WARMING TREND: No telling how many shoppers were out before daybreak, but we are sure they felt the biting cold. Temperatures early this morning dropped below freezing in a number of Alabama locations, especially in the NE Alabama valleys. We have a long list of those low temperatures on the 33/40 Weather BLOG, but we list a selected few here:
23 Hamilton
24 Cottondale
25 McCalla, Addison
26 Pinson, Scrougeout, Broomtown, Dora, Centreville
29 Cullman, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa
30 Birmingham, Anniston, Montgomery
Take heart, we have a warming trend ahead and pronounced enough that the old backyard thermometer will reach for 65 Saturday afternoon and 67 Sunday afternoon. It will still be cold again tonight, but several degrees warmer than last night.
OUR NEXT RAIN: Looks like a good chance of showers on Monday. We will have a temporary break on Tuesday, but more showers will arrive Tuesday night and become more widespread on Wednesday. Part of that is due to another cold front that will be moving through the area on Monday and by Wednesday another low-pressure area off the Louisiana/Mississippi coast will start encouraging a warm front to move northward from the Gulf.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Another near perfect night for high school play off games. Only cold-natured people will be uncomfortable, but even they will be okay if they wear some warm clothing. Clear weather is expected for all of the games. As a general rule, the temperature should be in the 40s at kick off and maybe around 38 for the final whistle. Not much wind is expected. Central Florida will be in Birmingham to play UAB Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. kick off. The temperature should get to a fairly comfortable 65 during the game, but maybe in the 50s by the final whistle.
GLOBAL ROAMING: The lower 48 is in fairly good shape for the continuing holiday weekend, especially for those needing to travel. Lots of rain over New England today and some winter storm advisories in the Western mountains, but overall the weather is quieter than normal for this time of year…the warm spot in the nation yesterday was 87 at Fullerton, California…cold spots this morning included 3 above zero at Bryce Canyon, Utah and Gunnison and Kremmling in Colorado…in Alaska, it is not as bitter cold as it has been recently. Lowest was 17 below at Fort Yukon.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I clearly need three arms and three hands when dealing with Little Miss Molly. I wish so badly that I could document by digital photography some of the great scenes on our walking track, but I have the leash in one hand and the highly important little blue scoop in the other. This morning she had me walking after I had only two ounces of coffee in my little body and the sun was not yet up. That was a beautiful scene in the wide open area near the Old Crow Motel. The first sun rays reflected across the frost-covered grass. Would have made a great Kinkade painting, but I did not know how to reach him. Life goes on.
