...The Alabama Story...

TWO MORE COLD FRONTS: It is not unusual at all to have a parade of cold fronts moving through Alabama this time of year. We have two more waiting in the wings to come across the state.

This afternoon a low-pressure area was moving across Missouri and Iowa with a cold front extending southward to Little Rock, Shreveport and Houston. It is not one of those fronts that is bringing in bitter cold. Instead, it will restock us with cooler dry air. Meanwhile, a second front will be coming through early on Thanksgiving Day and you will notice it more distinctly. We expect dry weather for the holiday with more sun than clouds, but NW winds will be 12-20 mph and a high only in the low to mid 50s.

A FREEZE? Will Friday morning be our first freeze for some parts of Central Alabama? It will be a close call. We are calling for an average low of 30. This means that some of the colder NE Alabama valleys could be as low as 26-30. This also means that you may want to dress warmly when you head to the mall way before sunrise. Good luck, because I will be sound asleep.

THE ALABAMA/AUBURN GAME: (Or, is it the Auburn/Alabama game?) I pull for both teams, but nobody in the whole wide world believes me except my little 9-pound puppy. Looks like great weather for the annual clash—this year being played in Auburn on Friday instead of Saturday. It should be sunny with temperatures at kick off in the lower 50s dropping quickly into the 40s during the second half. Winds should be fairly light, but you might still need some warm clothes. Tomorrow we will have a more extensive weather forecast—one day earlier than we normally do.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Looks like our best chance will come next Monday. We will finetune that by tomorrow. Updating Birmingham rain: the total for the year stands at 65.04 inches as compared to 47.04 a year ago today. Our surplus stands at 16.63 and Lake Purdy is still full!

LOOKING FAR AND WIDE: No severe weather expected in the good old USA for the next three days…somebody may get some fairly strong storms by Monday, however…the Tropics are as quiet as a sleeping dog and it is only six more days until the official hurricane season will be over…88 in Miami was the USA warm spot yesterday…at the bottom of the thermometer was Gunnison, Colorado with 2 below zero and Atqasuk, Alaska with 30 below…in extreme SE Alaska, the capitol of Juneau does not get as cold, but they can get a good amount of snow. They now have 8 inches on the ground…Seattle has received over a foot of rain in the last 7 weeks…windy in the NE. Nantucket gusts to 40 mph, 12-foot waves SE of Cape Cod, no tropical system involved.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Enjoyed lunch yesterday with Bill Murray and Jason Simpson…the young ladies were sure eyeing Jason. My little puppy was up very early again this morning, so we went on a half-mile walk. We did not see a cat, rabbit, bird or any living being, maybe because we were out so early. But Molly checked everyone of those spots where she had seen a rabbit or cat even in the last several weeks. She must have a computer-size memory. She is still developing strange habits on our walks. She will pick out a very small leaf on the ground and sniff it seemingly forever and then leave a few drops. This morning she tried to go to the bathroom on a small twig sticking out of the hedgerow and completely missed her target. I enjoy watching all of her little mannerisms. I wish I could copy some of them. Life goes on.
