...Dry Weather To Continue...
Get ready for a continuation of our fine fall weather pattern for the
foreseeable future. The good weather is nice, but we really could
use some rain. And no real good rain chances are in sight for the
next ten days.
RAINFALL UPDATE: Over the past couple of weeks, we have watched our
rainfall surplus in Birmingham slowly decline. Now we are 2.97 inches
above average for the year. At east we still have a surplus, but
other places are not as lucky. Montgomery is down 2.70 inches for the
year. At the start of September, they were nearly exactly even. In
Birmingham, we are 3.28 inches below normal for the month. In
Huntsville, at the Airport, 29.65 inches of rain has fallen since
January 1. Tuscaloosa is nearly ten inches below average (9.76
inches.) The average by this point is 42.77 inches, 13.12 inches
below average. Anniston is 1.76 inches short. In South Alabama,
Mobile is 5.55 inches short.
ALABAMA'S WEATHER: A weakening surface trough is lifting out of
Alabama this afternoon. A surface high was to the west of the state.
We continue under a northerly flow both at the
surface and aloft. Some low level moisture was around this morning to
produce some clouds and fog mainly over eastern sections, but that is
moving out also, leaving mostly sunny skies in its place. Monday looks
like it will be like today, with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures.
FRONTAL SYSTEM: A strong autumn trough will take shape over the
Great Lakes this week. It will push a cold front toward Alabama on
Tuesday. This front won't have much to work with in the way of
moisture, however, so rain chances will be very, very small. Behind
it, breezy, cooler and drier conditions will prevail over Alabama
through the rest of the week and into the weekend. Highs in the 70s
will become the norm, along with lows in the 50s. There will also be
some 40s, especially by Thursday morning.
HURRICANE KYLE: Kyle was passing about 160 miles east of Cape Cod
this afternoon, heading toward a landfall just east of Maine. Maine
has not seen a landfalling hurricane since 1969. Most of Kyle's punch
is on the eastern side of the storm, so it looks like Massachusetts
will miss tropical storm force winds. Tropical storm warnings and a
hurricane watch are in effect for Downeast Maine. Widespread power
outages are expected in Downeast Maine and the Martimes of Canada,
where trees will be broken or uprooted by the strong winds.
GULF DEPRESSION THIS WEEK? Surface low pressure over the Yucatan
Peninsula is expected to move northeastward out in the southern Gulf
of Mexico later today. It could become a tropical depression,
although a decent amount of wind shear should keep it from growing
very strong. It will impact the Florida Peninsula Monday night and
Tuesday with heavy rain and some wind.
ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Hurricane Juan made landfall on the coast of
Nova Scotia shortly before midnight, just west of Halifax. Winds
gusted as high as 90 mph in Halifax. Ahead of the storm, unseasonable
warmth surged into Canada. The high at Naim reached 77 degrees,
easily a record, and some thirty degrees above normal for the date.
