...Welcome Race Fans!...

Yesterday was the twelfth straight day without
measurable rain in Birmingham. We have only had one day with more
than one quarter inch of rain since Fay brought us over six inches of
rain over a three day period in late August. So, we could really use
some rain here in Central Alabama. Finally, some is in the forecast.

OUR FORECAST: The weekend will be warm and dry with a
good supply of sunshine. Highs will be in the 80s and lows in the
50s. By Monday, a storm system will begin to take shape to the west
of Alabama. Low pressure over Oklahoma will be supported by a very
strong early season upper level system. Severe weather will be likely
to the west of Alabama. We should see increasing clouds on Tuesday as
the system progresses to the east. It looks like a few showers will
edge into Alabama Tuesday night. By Wednesday, showers and storms
will be likely. We are getting into our secondary severe weather
season and some strong storms are possible. The system will be a slow
mover, and rain could be with us through the end of the week.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama entertains the Kentucky
Wildcats at 2:30 p.m. in Bryant Denny Stadium. Still missing: those
great old hot dogs. But that will affect the fans, not the teams.
The weather will have little impact. Sunny with a kickoff temperature
around 84, falling back into the 70s by the end of the game. Even
better weather in Nashville as Auburn travels to take on Vandy. Clear
at the 5 p.m. kickoff with a temperature in the upper 70s, falling
into the 60s during the game.

RACE WEATHER: Warm, sunny days all weekend at the
Superspeedway. Highs between 81-85. Comfortable overnight lows in
the 50s. Perfect weather for race fans from all over the world.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is quiet for now. But
the Colorado State team predicts that we will still see above normal
activity this month. Phil Klotzbach and Bill Gray are calling for
three named storms this month, two of which will become hurricanes.
One of them will go onto to attain major hurricane status. They
attribute the expected increase to warmer than normal sea surface
temperatures and lower than normal pressures across the basin. One
parameter, called the Madden Julian Oscillation, is going to pulse up
over the Gulf, Caribbean and Atlantic around the middle of the month.
The last pulse produced the wave of activity in late August and
September. With high pressure expected to build over the Northeast,
this could be the recipe for a landfalling U.S. system later in the
month.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Hurricane Flora spent 11 days in
October 1963 wreaking havoc along her path through the Caribbean. The
storm brought 170 mph winds and an 11 foot storm surge to Haiti,
killing 5000 people, making it the island nation's most destructive
hurricane. The slow moving storm would also bring 3 days of
torrential rainfalls of 15-20 inches to Cuba. The floods and
attendant mudslides kill 1300 people in that island nation. Castro
would refuse the United States offers of help.
