...Warmer Afternoons Ahead...

A WEEKEND WARMING TREND: Afternoons will turn warmer over the weekend,
but nights and early mornings will remain pleasantly cool as a dry
airmass remains in place. We are forecasting a high around 80 today,
with low to mid 80s tomorrow and Sunday. Early morning lows over the
weekend will be in the 50s.

The weather still looks mostly dry next week, although a few isolated
showers could show up by Tuesday or Wednesday, mainly over the
western third of the state. Highs next week will remain in the 80 to
85 degree range, slightly above average values for early October.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Excellent weather for the high school games
tonight. Comfortable temperatures in the 60s at kick off and in the
50s in the second half. Kentucky will be in Tuscaloosa to play Alabama
for a 2:30 kick off tomorrow (CBS-TV). We expect sunny weather with
about 84 at kick off and in the 70s in the 4th quarter. Auburn will be
in Nashville to play Vanderbilt with a 5:00 p.m. kick off on ESPN.
Clear with 78 at kick off and in the 60s in the fourth quarter.
Trinity University from San Antonio plays Birmingham Southern at noon
Saturday in Regions Park. High temperature during the game about 83.
Great story about Trinity in the Birmingham News sports section this
morning. And, Jacksonville State will host Southeast Missouri State at
Paul Snow stadium tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. The sky will be clear
with temperatures falling from near 79 at kickoff, to the upper 60s by
the fourth quarter.

RACING WEATHER: Yep, it is race weekend at Talladega. The sky will be
mostly sunny around the Superspeedway tomorrow and Sunday, with
afternoon highs in the 81 to 85 degree range. Nights will remain
pleasantly cool.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Disturbed weather remains over the Northwest
Caribbean, but upper air winds are rather harsh, and tropical storm
formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Tampa area is struck by several tornadoes,
caused by a low pressure system moving out of the Gulf of Mexico. One
F3 tornado struck Pinellas Park, where 75 people were injured and 3
killed. The storm also brought high tides of 4-5 feet to the west
coast of Florida. Heavy rains plagued north Florida and southern
Georgia. 10.14 inches fells at Brunswick GA and 8.69 inches at
Jacksonville FL. Major beach erosion occurred along the Hillsborough
County coast and at Egmont Key. Total damage was $32 million.

DRY DAYS: Today will be the 12th day in a row with no measurable rain
for Birmingham; and we are coming off the 7th driest September on
record (only 0.40" for the month). The average rain for the month of
October is 3.23", and it is the driest month of the year. The prospect
of a major rain event does not look good for the next 7 to 10 days.
