...Keeping An Eye on Charley...

GOOD MORNING! It seems that the weekend forecast headline is becoming a
fill in the blank. Keeping an Eye on _______. Just insert Charley, or
Frances or Ivan. Or Jeanne, or Lisa, or Karl, or maybe Matthew or Nicole.


FIRST, ABOUT IVAN: Ivan is an extremely dangerous hurricane. It passed
along the south coast of Jamaica during the night. Ivan strengthened to top
winds of 150 mph in the hours before approaching the island. If it loses
any steam while encountering the high terrain of the island, it should be
quickly regained over the warm waters between Jamaica and the Caymans today.
Ivan will pass the Cayman Islands tonight and cross Cuba late on Sunday.
Ivan will threaten the Sunshine State early in the week, passing over or
near the Florida keys on Monday. Then the track is a little uncertain.
Some model solutions carry the system up the west coast of the state to a
varying degree. Others take the storm across the peninsula and emerge it
over the Atlantic to head for South Carolina. There is still a chance the
storm could head for the central Gulf. No doubt it will be a major hurricane
wherever it goes.

OUR WEATHER: Today will feature lots of sunshine and just a few clouds. A
frontal system to our southeast separates drier air over us from tropical
air to the south. This frontal system may come back our way, bringing us a
chance of showers Sunday and Monday. By Tuesday, our weather may come under
the influence of the circulation of Ivan. The storm is expected to pass to
our east, keeping us on the drier side of the system. But we will see a
chance of showers in eastern sections and more breezy conditions.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Sunny and hot for AU at MSU. Gametime temperatures in
the upper 80s, rising to near 92. Clear and comfortable for Ole Miss at
Bama. 82 at kickoff, falling into the 70s during the game. Winds will be
light.

REMEBERING FREDERIC: On this date twenty five years ago, Alabamians were
closely monitoring Hurricane Frederic in the Gulf of Mexico. More in
