...A Stormy Time...

UNUSUAL SEVERE WEATHER FOR JANUARY: Here in Alabama in the Deep
South, we normally have two severe weather seasons. Our prime season
is in the spring from March to mid May. Over the long history, that is
the time of year that more often than not we get our worst tornadoes.
We do have a secondary season in autumn from November through mid
December. We can occasionally get some serious tornadoes then also. The
situation today is rather unusual. We are in mid Winter, of course,
and here we are with a Moderate Risk of severe weather. That does not
happen very often, especially not in January. A Tornado Watch was
issued that is in effect for the rest of this afternoon for a large
part of North and West Alabama. It is labelled as a "particularly
dangerous situation." This means that a few of the tornadoes could be
very strong and possibly stay on the ground a long time. Probably the
worst time for the severe weather in the greater Birmingham area will
be from mid afternoon through this evening. At some point, a line of
intense thunderstorms will cross the area and a number of those could
produce damaging winds. In West Alabama, the threat of tornadoes will
start earlier and continue through the afternoon. Finally, over in
East Alabama in places like Anniston and Roanoke, the main risk for
severe weather will be mid to late afternoon and extending well into
the night time.

RAIN PROSPECT: These storms will be dumping locally heavy rain. It is
possible that many places will get between 1 and 2 inches of rain.
Cooler dry air will overspread the area Friday. Saturday should also
be dry. We may see a little bit of rain on Sunday and mostly sunny
again on Monday. Our coldest temperatures will be early Monday with
lows in the mid to upper 20s.

THE WORLD AROUND US: 81 in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale were the warmest
in the country yesterday.

Coldest this morning was 15 below at Gunnison, Colorado. There can be
some extreme temperature changes in the middle of the country. One of
those occurred on this date in 1911 at Rapid City, South Dakota when
the temperature dropped an amazing 47 degrees in only 15 minutes.
Also, in past history at Browning, Montana, right up against the edge
of the Rockies, the temperature once took a nosedive of 100 degrees in
24 hours.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Last night when those showers moved
through, we heard only one peal of thunder. It was off to the east and
barely audible. However, that was enough to send Little Miss Molly
into the far back bedroom, then through the bathroom and into the
clothes closet to hide. She was shaking like a leaf. When we finally
went to bed around midnight, she was still frightened and it took us
about 30 minutes to rub her back and tummy and calm her down so she
could go to sleep. I have never seen a little doggie so scared of
thunder. Life goes on.
