A NICE COOL DOWN AHEAD: We have more heat to deal with today and Wednesday
and a Code Orange Ozone Alert was still in effect this afternoon. But a cool
front-rather strong for early August-will come through on Thursday. We
expect dry weather through Wednesday, but the front will set off scattered
showers and thunderstorms Thursday. It will also drop our high temperature
into the mid and upper 80s. Look for clearing and cooler weather Thursday
night with lows by Friday morning and again Saturday morning near 60. The
normally cooler north Alabama valleys could easily have lows in the upper
50s. With mostly sunshine, the humidity is going to be much lower on Friday
and Saturday. Just a slight hint of autumn.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Alex reached Category 2 off the Carolina coast
this morning. By late morning, sustained winds had reached near 100 mph with
gusts to 120. He churned up waves as high as 22 feet off shore. Fortunately,
Alex was passing just east of Cape Hatteras this afternoon and will continue
out over the open Atlantic. Meanwhile, a new tropical depression was born
east of the Lesser Antilles. This one will probably become Tropical Storm
Bonnie fairly quickly even before it reaches the Lesser Antilles. It was
moving west at 21 mph.

THE BEAUTY OF TUMBLEWEEDS: They were the subject of a famous western song,
"Tumbling Tumbleweeds" by the Sons of the Pioneers. I was reminded of that
when I saw a report from the 33/40 weather watcher in Billings, Montana
telling about strong microburst winds, blowing dust and tumbleweeds over the
weekend. I remember well driving through a blinding dust storm on the
eastern plains of New Mexico with big airborne tumbleweeds bouncing off my
car. By the way, congratulations to Todd Foisy. After graduating from the
University of Utah, he is now on the staff of the National Weather Service
in Billings, Montana. He is a native of Birmingham (Huffman)

LOOKING EVERYWHERE: Yes, elevation is the reason that both the highest and
lowest temperature in the USA was in California. It was 114 Monday in Death
Valley and 34 this morning at Truckee...great radar signatures on Hurricane
Alex this morning from North Carolina coastal radar. You could actually see
when Alex curved more to the NE...on this date in 1970, powerful Hurricane
Celia went ashore just north of Corpus Christi. It was a major disaster with
wind gusts up to 180 mph. Corpus Christi was severely damaged with 8,950
homes destroyed.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Exactly 22 seconds after little Miss Molly
crawled out of bed this morning, she was assembling toys in the middle of
the floor and looking at me eyeball to eyeball wanting to play. Of course, I
did even though I was in the midst of my delicious and delectable shredded
wheat...still doing highly scientific research to make it taste
better...buttermilk helps. Not a single bird on our early morning walk.
Seems like they have vanished from the face of the earth. Didn't see any
mosquitoes, but I had a sheet of Bounce in my shirt pocket. My thanks to two
of our readers in Hueytown and Columbiana for tipping me off on how Bounce
keeps varmints away. A lady in Columbiana also sent a nice little aid that
should make my forecasts a bit more accurate. Need all the help I can get.
Life goes on even when our friends the crows and other birds abandon us.
