THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: What's up with these fine fallish conditions
across Alabama here in the middle of August? Hey, don't look a gift horse
in the mouth, my grandmother always said, so we will just enjoy it. A
persistent light northeasterly wind flow kept readings a few degrees warmer
than they would have been in some locations, like the Birmingham Airport.
The low at KBHM was observed sometime around 3 a.m. when the mercury stood
at 60F. Huntsville did drop to 54F, which was a record for the date.
Other notable lows across North Alabama: 52 at Cullman and 54 at
Meridianville.

Temperatures today will range into the lower and middle 80s with quite
comfortable dew point readings in the lower 50s. This will mean
refreshingly low humidity values across the state today. Most lows will
stay above 60 tonight, although some of the normally cooler locations (you
know who you are,) may dip into the upper 50s again.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: The easterly flow that is over Alabama will begin to tap a
little Atlantic moisture overnight tonight, raising those dew points ever so
slightly and producing a little bit of cloudiness towards morning. Still, I
think that we will start the day with at least some sunshine, and partly
cloudy skies will prevail throughout the day. Look for highs tomorrow
afternoon to be in the middle to upper 80s. Dew points will be in the still

fairly comfortable lower 60s.

WEEK AHEAD: Monday still looks dry, despite that continued southeasterly
flow. Skies will be partly cloudy. I think that we can keep any shower or
storm chances out until Tuesday, when the surface flow over Alabama turns
more to the southeast and humidity levels rise to summer-like levels. By
Wednesday, our attention will turn to the north, where a cold front will be
on the horizon. It should be close enough to increase our shower and storm
chances by that time, with even better chances Wednesday night. It should
be on top of us Thursday morning, with another dose of cooler and drier air
overspreading the area after that. That spells nice weather for the end of
the week and into the weekend.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic has gone quiet again. The Caribbean
disturbance that was once TD#2 has virtually disappeared and has little
chance of regeneration. The disturbance east of the Leeward Islands is
weak.

OZONE WATCH: ADEM continues a Code YELLOW air quality alert for the
Birmingham metro area today and tomorrow. People who are especially
sensitive should not over exert themselves outdoors during the daytime.
ON THIS DATE IN 1993: Virginia experienced its worst tornado outbreak ever
as eighteen tornadoes rip through the state in five hours. In an average
year, only six tornadoes are reported in the state and the worst outbreak
prior to this date produced just ten. The most devastating tornado caused
severe damage in the historic part of Petersburg. It also ripped apart a
WalMart store at Colonial Heights, killing three people and injuring nearly
200. The F4 twister was the first known violent tornado in Virginia
history. It killed a total of four people and injured 246 along its twelve
mile path. Total damages were nearly $50 million.
